Description

PCG is looking for a Cerner Millennium HIM (Health Information Management) Specialist who will manage and organize patient health information using the Cerner Millennium electronic health record (EHR) system.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the accurate and timely management of patient health records, including indexing, scanning, and organizing documents into the electronic health record system.
  • Assigning appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to patient records for accurate billing and reimbursement. This may involve using coding systems such as ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • Maintaining data integrity within the EHR system by conducting regular audits and quality checks. Verifying the accuracy and completeness of patient information and resolving any discrepancies.
  • Facilitating the release of patient health information to authorized individuals or organizations in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
  • Ensuring adherence to privacy and security regulations in handling sensitive patient information. Implementing policies and procedures to protect patient confidentiality and prevent unauthorized access.
  • Collaborating with healthcare providers and other stakeholders to optimize the use of the Cerner Millennium EHR system. Assisting with system upgrades, troubleshooting, and user support as needed.
  • Extracting and analyzing data from patient records to support clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and healthcare decision-making processes.
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, administrators, and other HIM staff, to ensure accurate and comprehensive patient documentation. Effective communication skills are essential for conveying information and resolving queries related to health records.

Requirements
  • Education: A minimum requirement is typically a high school diploma or equivalent. However, many employers prefer candidates with formal education in health information management, health informatics, or a related field. A bachelor's degree in health information management or a Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) certification can be advantageous.
  • Certification: Obtaining relevant certifications can enhance job prospects. Some common certifications in the field of health information management include Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
  • Knowledge of Health Information Systems: Proficiency in working with electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Specific experience with Cerner Millennium or other EHR platforms is highly desirable. Understanding the functionality and features of EHR systems, including data entry, retrieval, and analysis, is important.
  • Medical Coding and Classification: Familiarity with medical coding systems, such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System), is valuable. Proficiency in assigning accurate diagnostic and procedural codes is necessary for coding and abstracting responsibilities.
  • Compliance and Privacy Regulations: A solid understanding of healthcare laws and regulations, including HIPAA, is crucial for ensuring patient data privacy and compliance. Knowledge of release of information processes and the ability to apply regulations appropriately is essential.
  • Analytical Skills: The ability to analyze health information, identify trends, and extract meaningful insights is valuable. Proficiency in data management and analysis tools can be advantageous.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail is necessary for accurately reviewing and maintaining health records. Ensuring data integrity and identifying errors or inconsistencies requires meticulousness.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are vital for collaborating with healthcare professionals and conveying information accurately. The ability to work as part of a team and interact with individuals across different departments is important.
  • Organizational and Time Management Skills: The role of a Cerner Millennium HIM professional involves managing multiple tasks, prioritizing workloads, and meeting deadlines. Strong organizational and time management skills are necessary to handle the volume of health information effectively.
