Job Description:

This advertisement is for a 9-month technician position in the Clinical and Surgical Skills service area of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and will report the Chair of Veterinary Practice Skills.

The credentialed veterinary technician in this position will assist in instruction of students (DVM, veterinary technician) and advanced trainees (interns and residents) in technical skills related to the practice of veterinary medicine, with a focus on anesthetic skills

Associate Clinical Specialist 1

40% Assist with provision of anesthesia, surgical nursing support, and post-operative recovery in anesthesia and surgery for instruction of veterinary anesthesia and surgery (e.g., DVM students, veterinary technician students, house officers, foreign graduates). 30% Instruct veterinary students, veterinary technology students, house officers, and foreign graduates in clinical skills, with an emphasis on anesthetic techniques 

30 % Assist with instruction of veterinary students, veterinary technology students, house officers, and foreign graduates in clinical skills, with an emphasis on anesthetic techniques 

10% Inventory and order anesthesia related supplies.  Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot anesthetic equipment within the laboratory space.

10% Assist with all aspects of animal use in the lab, including transport of cadaveric specimens and preparation of the aforementioned specimens for lab use

10% Set up and administer objective structured clinical skills examinations (OSCEs).
Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology OR Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or CVT or equivalent. Candidate who has not yet met the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply but must have the required degree, CVT, or equivalent at time of hire.

Minimum Certifications/Licenses:

Registered Veterinary Technician in Louisiana (or obtain certification within 6 months of hire)
Class E DL

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with 1 year experience teaching, 1 year experience handling dog and cat cadavers

Associate Clinical Specialist 2

Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):

  • Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.
  • *Due to the nature of this position and/or responsibilities, this position is subject to random drug & alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67*
  • Vehicle Operation - University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
  • Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, stand or walk for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, kneel or sit on the floor, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), bending, push/pulling, climbing, sitting, twisting, grasping, and squatting
  • FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
