Job description

At the ORR Children's Shelter, in association with Teneo Linguistics Company, we understand that navigating a new culture and environment can be challenging. We're in search of a dedicated Qeqchi Bilingual Specialist/Cultural Navigator who can bridge this gap for our children. Your role will provide more than just translation; it's about fostering understanding, mentorship, and a deeper cultural connection, helping children adjust and integrate while preserving the richness of their heritage.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide precise translation and interpreting services, both in person and over phone/video, ensuring effective communication across different languages.
Meet with children, offering mentorship and guidance as they navigate through the challenges of a new cultural environment.
Act as a key resource for program staff, offering insights and technical assistance related to cultural practices, helping ensure services are culturally sensitive and appropriate.
Foster a cultural connection with the youth, serving as a trusted figure with whom they can share, relate, and learn.
Work collaboratively with case managers, clinicians, and other staff, enhancing the overall care provided to children.

Requirements

Must be fully bilingual, exhibiting fluency and comfort in both English and Qeqchi.
Personal lived experience as a refugee/newcomer to the U.S. or possesses relevant cultural experience is highly valued.
Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to connect with and mentor children from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to work collaboratively with a team, providing insights and recommendations based on cultural understanding.
Prior experience in translation or interpreting is an asset, though not mandatory.
