This full-time remote position serves as a data abstractor for the Iowa Violent Death Reporting System (IA-VDRS) and is responsible for reviewing death certificate, medical examiner and law enforcement reports for all deaths that occur in Iowa due to violence. This includes the responsibility of abstraction, complex coding and data entry into the CDC's data system. The position assists the IA-VDRS program manager in data and record management to maintain the quality, accuracy, integrity and confidentiality of all hard-copy and electronic data. The position serves as representative and as the field liaison between the program manager, the director, the data sources, the advisory board, community anti-violence groups and other injury prevention advocacy groups. This position works closely with management and technical staff in developing community relations and disseminating data summaries, tables, charts and other public relation initiative.
Required Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical coding, health information technology, criminal justice, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
6 months – 1 year experience in record abstraction.
Strong verbal and written communications skills.
Demonstrated ability to function independently.
Experience developing human subject IRB applications, protocols, and/or data collection instruments.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to travel, valid US driving license and ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard is required.
Desirable Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to review and code medical records according to rigorous protocols.
Familiarity with the ICD-9 and 10-CM coding system.
Familiarity with occupation data (Department of Labor Standard Occupational Classification codes).
Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and abstract law enforcement records.
Demonstrated ability to summarize and write concise but specific narratives based on data.
Experience entering complex data into computerized databases.
Knowledge of epidemiologic and survey methods in public health.
Ability to relate well with outside agencies (police departments and county medical examiners).
Demonstrated evidence of success in handling time sensitive assignments.
Proficiency with computers using Windows and Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access (or other data entry/management software).
