SUMMARY
Under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) cooperative agreement, Heluna Health and Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are recruiting for a Research Analyst to be part of the Mycotic Diseases team.
The Valley Fever Research Analyst will work with staff in the California Department of Public Health Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB), to improve coordination and surveillance for Valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) case and outbreak investigations.The Research Analyst’s primary responsibilities would be to support the Mycotic Diseases Epidemiologist in conducting routine and enhanced surveillance for Valley Fever, a respiratory fungal disease endemic in California which has been increasing dramatically in recent years. As needed, this position may also support other Valley Fever activities such as assisting with outbreak investigation and outreach efforts and other non-Valley Fever mycotic disease surveillance activities.
This position’s major responsibilities would be to collect, clean, and manage surveillance data; to conduct quality control and basic analysis of data, to assist with development of protocols and data collection tools, and to conduct patient interviews.
This full-time, temporary position is grant-funded but may be extended if funding is available.

The hourly range for this position is $21.90 per hour to $30.00 per hour depending on experience/qualifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage, clean, and maintain data quality and completeness of existing surveillance datasets
- Conduct basic analyses of data
- Assist with the establishment of new protocols and data collection tools
- Assist with the generation of data visualizations and written and oral reports
- Establish and maintain reliable, efficient, and effective methods for communicating with team members, partners, and patients via telephone and email
- Participate in conference calls with partners at CDPH, CDC, California LHDs, laboratories, and other state and local health departments
- Perform other duties as directed by the DIS Chief
- Collaborate effectively in a team environment
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with other infectious disease-related projects as time and interest allows
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to perform data entry, data cleaning, and data quality assessment with attention to detail
- Knowledge and application of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and protection of health information
- Ability to conduct basic data analysis
- Completes assignments in a timely and efficient manner
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently
- Demonstrate reliability and integrity
- Prior experience conducting telephone-based patient interviews, preferred,
- Prior knowledge and experience in use of CalREDIE, preferred
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with public health and healthcare professionals and patients
- Ability to provide health education and communicate basic infectious disease information to Valley Fever patients and members of the public
- Fluency in spoken English is required; fluency in Spanish or other languages preferred
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in any field, required
- Graduate degree in public health, preferred
- Experience with epidemiology and data analysis, required
- Basic knowledge and use of statistical software such as Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) or R, preferred
- Basic knowledge and use of data visualization software such as Tableau or R, preferred
- Experience writing guidelines, standard operating procedures, or training materials, preferred
- Experience conducting interviews with or working with patients or research participants, preferred
- Experience with clinical terminology and interpreting laboratory testing results, preferred
Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Experience with Microsoft products including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access; strong knowledge of Word and Excel, preferred
- Experience with Adobe products including Acrobat; strong knowledge of Acrobat, preferred
- Experience working with interview/survey software, such as REDCap, SurveyMonkey, Survey123, Qualtrics, or Microsoft Forms, preferred
