Promotes safe and quality patient care across TUKHS to ensure better patient outcomes and reduce liability exposure. Researches, analyzes, and interprets proposed and existing laws, statues, and regulations to identify and monitor areas of patient care risk. Collaborates with external counsel to provide relevant information and coordinate on legal issues involving patient care.Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
Assists in the ongoing implementation of the Hospital Risk Management Plan and annual assessment.
Researches, analyzes, and interprets proposed and existing laws, statutes, and regulations.
Identifies, monitors, and addresses areas of risk surrounding safe and quality patient care.
Provides guidance based on law on topics including but not limited to patient capacity, safe discharge, guardianship, and informed consent.
Consults with external counsel to provide relevant information and coordinate on legal issues involving patient care.
Supports employees in patient care legal proceedings by preparing them for depositions and testimony.
Ensures health system patient care practices are compliant with external regulations and internal standards.
Works to prevent situations that can result in losses or liability including diagnostic, surgical or medication errors.
Trend, organize, and report data related to risk management and patient safety.
Collaborate with department chairs, medical staff risk management, peer review and organization improvement committees to facilitate appropriate review and support quality and safe patient care.
Ability to work effectively from home and onsite.
Participate in taking risk management call.
Able to skillfully and professionally communicate and partner with others via email, telephone, and in person.
Able to teach, share information and develop presentations.
Uses time efficiently and effectively. Able to develop and meet project time frames.
Seek opportunities to share expertise and mentor others
Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
Juris Doctor J.D. from an accredited law school required.
7 or more years of increasing risk experience in the patient care and safety.
Preferred Education and Experience
Bachelor Degree Nursing from an accredited College or University.
Required Licensure and Certification
License to Practice Law - State Bar Association Admission in good standing to the Kansas bar within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Licensure and Certification
License to Practice Law - State Bar Association Admission in good standing to the Missouri bar within 12 months of hire.
Knowledge Requirements
In depth knowledge of laws, statues, and regulations applying to the delivery of patient care and related areas.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, negotiation, and influencing skills.
Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
