The ESG & Sustainability Program Manager is responsible for leading the development and execution of our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy while overseeing key sustainability initiatives. This role is responsible for implementing ESG policies, managing sustainability programs, tracking progress, and driving alignment across departments to integrate responsible business practices. This position will also oversee future team growth, including direct reports, to expand ESG capabilities. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in corporate sustainability, ESG reporting, and project management.
Primary Accountabilities:
Strategic (30%)
- Support the development, implementation, and refining of ESG policies, ensuring alignment with company goals and regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with internal teams to integrate ESG principles into business operations, risk management, and decision-making.
- Monitor and analyze ESG and sustainability trends, regulations, and best practices to proactively refine company strategies.
- Ensure compliance with relevant environmental, social, and governance regulations and standards, including California’s SB 253 and SB 261.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction and risk mitigation to ensure resilience against external ESG skepticism and regulatory changes.
Project Management (30%)
- Lead the development and execution of sustainability initiatives including carbon footprint reduction, energy efficiency, waste management, responsible sourcing and supply chain sustainability.
- Partner with key internal stakeholders to define sustainability goals and develop action plans to achieve them.
- Identify and implement best practices for responsible sourcing, circular economy initiatives/strategies, and environmental impact reduction.
- Support supply chain sustainability efforts and assess vendors for ESG compliance and risks
- Establish, track and monitor key ESG and sustainability performance indicators (KPIs) to measure progress.
- Conduct data collection and analysis to evaluate ESG performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare and submit reports for internal stakeholders, investors, regulatory bodies, and external sustainability frameworks, including ISSB, GHG Protocol, GRI, SASB, TCFD, and CDP.
- Ensure transparency and accuracy in ESG disclosures and sustainability reports.
Technical (40%)
- Act as the primary liaison across internal departments, including Operations, Supply Chain, HR, Finance, and Legal, to drive ESG initiatives.
- Engage with external stakeholders, including investors, customers, industry groups, and regulatory agencies, to communicate the company’s ESG commitments and progress.
- Collaborate with internal teams to align ESG and sustainability efforts with corporate strategy, risk management, and financial planning.
- Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and environmental impact reduction.
- Develop training programs and awareness initiatives to foster an ESG-focused corporate culture, enhancing internal sustainability adoption.
- Research and implement innovative technologies, partnerships, and certifications that advance the company’s ESG and sustainability objectives.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction and risk mitigation to ensure resilience against external ESG skepticism and regulatory changes.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Business, Public Policy, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in ESG, sustainability program management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), or a related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks, climate risk assessment, and environmental regulations.
- Experience managing sustainability programs, including carbon footprint reduction, waste management, and energy efficiency.
- Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in Sustainability, Environmental Management, or Waste Management (e.g., LEED, Zero Waste, RCRA, etc.).
- Experience in corporate sustainability programs, ESG reporting, and waste data analytics.
