Job description

How You’ll Contribute

The Human Resources (HR) team works to find, grow and retain talent and build the NGS community. HR is dedicated to designing and building people and total reward strategies that enhance employee culture and the employee experience at NGS. The HR department includes HR Business Partners, Total Rewards & Recognition, Talent Management, and it leads the internship program at NGS.

Reporting to the Director of Total Rewards, the Compensation Analyst will focus on analyzing compensation data, benchmarking salaries, completing surveys, ensuring alignment with internal structures and compliance with applicable labor laws. The Compensation Analyst will work collaboratively with the HR Team on projects and compensation, rewards and recognition initiatives with an emphasis on providing analysis and insight in order to support the Society’s mission. The Analyst will also administer the Society’s workers’ compensation program and complete all required regulatory reporting.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Compensation Analysis (70%)

  • Provides compensation analysis for the Society to determine FLSA status and appropriate salary range for new positions

  • Regularly audits data to ensure compliance with the NGS compensation philosophy as well as with federal, state, and local regulations

  • Participates in compensation surveys and manages survey database and reports on trends

  • Assists the Director with annual process to compare all jobs with market to ensure competitiveness and alignment with NGS compensation philosophy

  • Respond to inquiries from staff regarding compensation positioning 

Reward and Recognition Support (20%)

  • Assists in the annual merit and promotion process

  • Regularly inputs recipient data into the recognition platform

  • Administer our annual awards program

  • Research and recommend enhancements to existing and new reward programs 

  • Prepares quarterly reports on rewards utilization

Research and other team support (10%)

  • Complete all regulatory annual compensation reporting to include; EEO-1  and California Pay Data

  • Compile and analyze compensation, incentive plan, and recognition queries/reports for management review

  • File workers compensation reports and completes annual OSHA reporting

  • Regularly audit and update workers compensation codes in the HR database

  • Regularly research and report on regulatory changes, market, merit and overall compensation trends

  • Assist in preparing communications to staff regarding all compensation, rewards and recognition activities

  • Along with internal communications, keep intranet page for Compensation and Recognition up to date

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

3+ years of compensation analysis experience 

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven ability with complex quantitative analysis

  • Strong attention to detail and excellent problem solving skills

  • Advanced MS Excel and Power Point skills

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

  • A self-starter who is able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, but someone who can also work as part of a team

  • Experience with HRIS functionality and payroll practices

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Specialized compensation knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of regulations governing Human Resources and compensation practices.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $80,700.00 - $85,000.00

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
