DaVita is dynamic, growing and entrepreneurial.  We currently seek a Vice President, Group Medical Director. The optimal employed Group Medical Director (GMD) has been a practicing nephrologist with experience as a dialysis medical director.  The GMD will work closely with the National Group Medical Director, operational Group Vice President and the OPUS (Senior Director of Clinical Services) team.

Reporting Structure: The GMDs report in a solid line fashion to the National GMD and in a dotted line to the Operating Group Vice Presidents they support.     

Responsibilities: The GMD should meet all of the requirements of DaVita employment, including but not limited to regular compliance, HIPAA, and other workplace training.  As a member of DaVita, the GMD must adhere to the values of DaVita. 

The GMD has four sets of specific duties:

Physician/Medical Director Support

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and as a resource for physicians and medical directors
  • Navigate the complexities of a large corporation to help take advantage of all available resources
  • Maintain open lines of communication
  • Mentor medical directors
  • Participate in Peer Review/Governing Body when needed
  • Assist with new medical director onboarding

Field Support

  • Work closely with Senior Director of Clinical Services, as well as DCS/CSS teams
  • Drive clinical outcomes, such as Clinical Leaderboard, Dashboard and DaVita Quality Index (DQI) results, Publicly Reported Data (PRD), patient safety, etc.
  • Provide teammate and physician education
  • Work with disruptive physicians to improve behavior
  • Actively support the admissions process and be directly involved in medical director admission denials

Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) Support

  • Assist with development and execution of clinical initiatives, including workgroups for various clinical metrics
  • Drive responsible resource utilization (e.g. Anemia, mineral bone disease, tPA, etc.)
  • Work with Patient and Physician Experience teams
  • Participate actively at regional/national meetings (e.g. PLM, NQM, ASN, etc.)
  • Help execute new initiatives and pilots
  • Provide “real-world” feedback to national teams
  • Support Integrated Kidney Care (IKC) initiatives

Palmer GVP and DVP Support

  • Serve as a physician voice to business leaders
  • Advocate for physician and patient experience
  • Assist with Palmer strategy and growth
  • Participate in internal and external stakeholder meetings, including business development
  • Help drive key Palmer-specific initiatives
  • Participate in teammate training

Relationships: The GMD should strive to develop professional relationships across the organization to facilitate care delivery and to help drive DaVita’s strategic goals.  Key relationships for the GMD include:

Senior Director of Clinical Services:  The GMD and SCDS should have mutual access to one another with regular touch points (weekly or more frequently).  The GMD should also develop strong working relationships with the DCS team.

Palmer leadership:  At the Palmer GVP’s discretion, the GMD may serve on Palmer senior leadership team.  The GMD should also develop professional relationships with the DVPs, Home leads and, to the extent possible, the RODs they serve.

  • National GMD:  Serves as manager, resource and oversees GMD professional development
  • OCMO:  The GMD is a part of OCMO and is expected to build professional relationships with other members of OCMO.  The GMD should also develop a professional working relationship with the staff and members of the Credentialing and Peer Review Committee (CPRC).
  • Team Pegasus:  The business development arm of DaVita will work closely with the GMD in situations where physician leadership benefits key relationships with DaVita stakeholders
  • Clinical and Home leadership:  The clinical and home teams develop policies and procedures to improve the clinical care that DaVita provides.
  • Medical directors:  The GMD should strive to develop professional relationships with key medical directors who can subsequently influence care delivery in their geographies.  The GMD should develop strategic partnerships with influential physicians.

Time allocation:  The GMD will allocate approximately 0.4 FTE to each Palmer that they support.  The remaining time may be allocated as follows:

OCMO/Clinical work Supporting another strategic business initiative (e.g. Skilled Nursing Facility dialysis) May provide clinical care up to 8 hours per week (0.2 FTE).  This time would be carved out from DaVita employment and must not interfere with responsibilities associated with DaVita employment Other-at the direction of the Chief Medical Officer

Travel:  In an effort to build relationships, participate in internal and external meetings, evaluate clinical care first-hand and assist in training, the GMD is expected to travel up to 2 or more days per week (average).

Evaluation and Bonus Structure:  Each GMD will be evaluated at least annually, including by 360-degree evaluation process.  The annual bonus structure will be based on performance on key metrics, to be defined.

Other responsibilities:  The GMD must be flexible, as the role is not limited to the above description.  The GMD may also serve as a “friendly PC” for DaVita provider businesses

Salary/ Wage Range

$236,000.00 - $358,000.00 / year

Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience.
