Position Type: Volunteer; Remote

Position Overview: LJI adopts a data-centric and evidence-based approach to all aspects of our work. For our anti-trafficking program, we collect, verify, and analyze data about victims and suspected traffickers, using our own software, which helps to provide insight into traffickers’ strategies and to evaluate our work. 

Our data scientists develop predictive models and analytical insights to enhance our operations, but we need skilled data engineers to translate those insights into practical applications. The Applied Data Engineer Volunteer will play a key role in bridging this gap by operationalizing data science models and optimizing data infrastructure to support LJI’s mission.

The duration of this volunteer opportunity is flexible, but we ask for a minimum commitment of 100 hours. Please include a brief cover letter and your resume with your application.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Implementing and deploying machine learning models and data analytics solutions into scalable, production-ready applications.
• Designing and optimizing data pipelines to support real-time and batch-processing of anti-trafficking data.
• Collaborating with data scientists and software engineers to integrate insights into actionable systems and decision-making tools.
• Enhancing data storage, retrieval, and processing efficiency to support intelligence-led investigations and trend analysis.
• Improving and maintaining LJI’s data architecture to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and security across various data sources.

Qualifications:

• A strong commitment to social justice and advocacy on behalf of vulnerable populations.
• Highly self-motivated with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Minimum of a bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in data engineering, machine learning engineering, or a related role.
• Proficiency in Python, SQL, and relevant data engineering tools (e.g., Apache Airflow, Spark, or similar frameworks).
• Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) is preferred.
• Familiarity with deploying and maintaining machine learning models in production environments is a plus.
