As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
At the moment, this role is focused on:

- As an experienced engineer, you will work with the code directly to help the team deliver scalable and robust product features for Canva users around the world.
- You will work closely with the stakeholders to understand and contribute to the product roadmap.
- You will drive the planning and refinement of cycle goals, ensuring there is alignment between the company, group, and teams.
- You will foster a culture of collaboration and advocate for the engineering needs of non-technical collaborators within the group.
You're probably a match if you have:
- Previous experience in technical people leadership or mentorship of high performing engineers
- Experience in full-stack software development with a strong emphasis on front-end technologies, including Java and Typescript
- Understanding of backend development and systems engineering, including building and maintaining scalable infrastructure.
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks and maintain team focus to deliver high impact goals
- Knowledge or experience working with video and graphics technologies is highly advantageous, though not mandatory
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to break large projects down into smaller ones and deliver on them through others.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.

The Video Export team is responsible for developing, maintaining, and evolving the systems that power Canva’s video experiences.
Specifically, this team owns the backend systems as well as components of the web stack that enable the export to downloadable videos. Maintaining video quality & fidelity, while ensuring optimal performance & cost, through the use of cutting-edge device capabilities is at the heart of this team. This team will play a pivotal role in our video strategy in the years to come to enhance remote and local export capabilities, taking advantage of the technology and hardware advancements to optimise performance, reliability and cost.
About the role
As the Engineering Manager for the Video Export team, you will lead a small team of 3 engineers, focusing on delivering critical goals while maintaining a hands-on approach. You’ll be instrumental in solving technical challenges across the stack, ensuring robust systems, and fostering a collaborative and productive team environment, working closely with our Staff Engineer and directly coaching 2 engineers.
This role requires strong systems engineering expertise, a solid backend development background, and the ability to dive into technical details - but also a solid experience of Typecript and Javascript. Whether it’s debugging rasterisation issues caused by a Chromium update, resolving spot instances scaling problems, or fixing frontend synchronization issues in the export stack, you’ll play an active role in ensuring the team’s success.
