Job description

Are You the Kind of CFO Who Can See the Story Behind the Numbers?

You're not just a spreadsheet slinger. You're someone who gets fired up when a P&L starts to tell a story—especially when that story can change a small business owner's life. You know how to take financial statements, connect them to a client's motivations, and help them make smart, courageous decisions grounded in data—not fear.

You love educating and breaking down financials into clear, actionable insight. You challenge assumptions, help clients face facts, and use real-life experience (and maybe a little humor) to steer entrepreneurs toward better futures.

You understand that knowing the numbers isn't enough action is what drives results. You’re calm when clients get stuck, persistent in helping them take the next step, and you know: No Action = No Results = No Value.

If you love helping small businesses grow—especially when their owner is overwhelmed, undercapitalized, or unsure—you might be exactly who we’re looking for.

Who We Are

We’re How To Manage A Small Law Firm, one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing privately held companies every year since 2013. We started at a dining room table and now support over 500 small law firms across the country with outsourced CEO, COO, CFO, CMO, and bookkeeping services. (Don’t worry—we’ll teach you what you need to know about law firms. Think of this as working with small businesses that just happen to practice law.)

We’re a team of real humans who value honesty, humility, humor, and 100% personal responsibility. We work hard, play hard, take care of our people, and only hire A-Players who believe in high standards, continuous growth, and measurable impact.

If you’re the type who enjoys reading a budget variance for fun or gets a little giddy building a cash flow forecast—you’re going to love, it here.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Fractional CFO, you'll act as the financial strategist and partner for up to 30 small law firm clients (who you can accept or decline working with). You’ll work in collaboration with a team (typically a Lead CEO, COO, CFO—you! —and sometimes a CMO).

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Meet virtually with each client twice per month (~60 hours/month of direct client time)
  • Analyze financial statements and spot trends, issues, and opportunities
  • Translate complex financial concepts into clear action steps
  • Hold clients accountable for the financial actions needed to reach their goals
  • Collaborate with bookkeepers to correct errors and ensure data integrity
  • Participate in regular pod meetings and company-wide training
  • Help assess and guide improvements in financial systems, controls, and processes
  • Travel occasionally to attend live events (optional, unless training is needed)

Total workload averages 40–45 hours/week (1,700–1,900 hours/year), fully remote, with high flexibility and meaningful impact.

What Makes You a Strong Fit

  • You’re financially fluent but speak plain English.
  • Have you had direct face time or regular interaction with executive leadership?
  • Do you have at least 10 years of experience at a level other than Controller within a small company?
  • Have you spent a decade or more working in a highly profitable business?
  • Have you ever saved a company from bankruptcy?
  • Do you have a strong personality and the ability to follow the rules, even when the questions are open-ended and unclear?
  • You love developing, teaching and guiding and not just presenting reports.
  • Are you open minded and willing to listen to others' opinions, even if you have strong views of your own?
  • You’re adaptable, resourceful, and can “pivot” with a sense of humor.
  • You are a people person!!!!!

Your Experience Should Include

  • A business degree (accounting/finance emphasis strongly preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in financial leadership roles (CFO, Controller, etc.)
  • Deep FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis skills
  • Experience creating financial models and dashboards that drive action
  • Comfort navigating imperfect data and cleaning up accounting records
  • High emotional intelligence and a coaching mindset

This Job Is NOT For You If:

  • You want to delegate all the 'dirty work' and just talk strategy
  • You’re uncomfortable confronting clients with the truth (gently, but firmly)
  • You’ve never worked in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • You thrive only in a highly structured corporate world
  • You’re a QuickBooks operator looking for a cushy desk job
  • You want part-time work, this is a full-time role

Important Notes

This is a remote, full-time role.
We can only hire team members who reside in the following states due to tax laws*:
(We’ll provide the full list in the application.)

We believe in equal opportunity. We love working with parents, career changers, and lifelong learners. We value emotional intelligence, diversity, humility, and humor.

Ready to Apply?

This is a life-changing opportunity—for you and the clients you’ll serve. If you’re a strategic financial leader who loves rolling up your sleeves, inspiring action, and making a real difference, we want to hear from you.

Apply today and help small business owners build the financial clarity and confidence they need to grow thriving firms and fulfilling lives.
