PURPOSE – 

 

  • This position is responsible for implementing and updating StarKist’s Quality Assurance, Supplier Approval and Food Safety Programs.  Review specific quality department activities so that plant operations are supported by early problem-identification, problem solving and problem-prevention.
  • Technical support for other departments such as Operations, Research & Development, Regulatory Affairs, Procurement and Inventory Control/Distribution to develop specifications, process controls, Ingredient Specifications and Vendor Approvals and Warehousing.

 

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES – List the activities you perform on a regular basis.  Identify the major end result your position is expected to achieve for each of these activities. 

 

  • Supplier and Ingredient Monitoring 
  • Monitor and verify that suppliers adhere to established food quality and safety protocols
  • Review, track, and maintain up-to-date supplier and ingredient documentation 
  • Conduct risk analyses for both ingredients and suppliers based on quality, safety, and regulatory criteria.
  • Identify, document, and address non-compliance or deviations; coordinate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with suppliers.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure supplier issues are resolved promptly and align with company policies.
  • Support supplier audits and performance evaluations as needed.
  • Assist in developing and improving supplier qualifications and monitoring processes.

 

  • R&D Support and Commissioning 
  • Responsible for anticipating and solving quality problems through evaluation of ingredients, processes, materials, and finished products
  • Support Commissioning tasks; specification compliance, product sampling, product testing, data analysis, proposing changes to specifications or process memos.
  • Enforce compliance with official formulas, procedures, and appropriate policy positions issued by the company
  • Assist and support R&D, FSQA, and Plants in production start-ups and projects

 

  • Specifications and Procedure Development 
  • Responsible for distributing, interpreting, and enforcing compliance with official formulas, procedures, and appropriate policy positions issued by Company
  • Responsible for revising specifications based on statistical analysis of data 
    • Product reviews and product audits are conducted on a scheduled basis to determine compliance with specifications
  • Responsible for reviewing, editing, and updating Corporate Quality Procedures

 

  • Finished Product and Competitive Product Cuttings and Reviews
  • Receive/organize/present samples to host the corporate cuttings 
  • Make dispositions on products that are out of specification, and work with plants on sustainable corrective actions so similar non-conformances are not repeated
  • Develop and manage Finished Product and Competitive Product Cutting Calendar and communicate to HQ Personnel
  • Document results and development reports

 

  • Administrative / Communication
  • Communicate with the organization on quality-related topics, trends, and current and future events
  • Participate in weekly meetings with Corporate QA and R&D
  • Participate in monthly meetings with the QA group, corporate, and plant QA leadership
  • Issue Quality Alerts and Holds when Food Safety or Quality issues arise
  • Address customer requests and questions 

 

Other aspects of this position that are required of an incumbent:

  • Must be able to travel by plane. Approximate travel is 25 - 30%. (includes international, passport required)
  • Must be capable of travel for extended periods. (extended: 5-7 days)
  • Must be able to work in a factory environment dealing with all aspects of the product, from ingredients to processing equipment, to successfully conduct plant testing and commissioning.
  • Physical labor (able to lift 50 lbs. and maneuver around equipment)
  • Ability to comprehend written instructions and communicate directions
  • Possess computer skills: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and able to learn new programs 
  • Learn CMX and SAP software systems 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/COMPETENCIES-What degrees or courses are required for this job?   What type of and how much prior experience is required to do this job?  List specific competencies required for this job.   

  • BS in Food Science or the equivalent
  • 1-3 years of overall professional experience in quality assurance, food safety, and supplier monitoring
  • Broad knowledge and experience in quality gained at successive levels of responsibility in multiple areas of plant procedures and governmental standards

Demonstrated proficiency in supporting corporate interests from remote site locations and the ability to communicate and exercise very positive people skills.
