Job description

The Institutional Banking and Markets (IB&M) business unit manages relationships with major corporate and government clients and institutional investors. The Global Economic & Markets Research (GEMR) division provides clients with regular, real-time research and insights enriched by CommBank internally generated data, showing changes in the economy across income, savings, expenditure, and lending. The team provides exceptional research and insights, and their work primarily involves developing and communicating views on the Australian economy and financial markets.

What your day will look like:

As a Senior Economist, you’ll play a leading role in shaping and communicating strategic views on the Australian economy and financial markets. You’ll be a visible thought leader, delivering high-impact insights to internal stakeholders and external clients, and helping drive business outcomes across Institutional Banking and Markets.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring, analysing, and forecasting the Australian economy using traditional and emerging data sets

  • Producing original, timely, and thought-provoking research across written reports, presentations, videos, podcasts, and social media

  • Supporting trading and risk management activities with high-quality analysis and forecasts

  • Building strong relationships with key stakeholders and clients

  • Enhancing the brand and reputation of the team through media engagement and client interactions

  • Leading and mentoring junior economists, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture

  • Adhering to editorial, media, privacy, and compliance protocols, including GEMR peer review procedures

What you’ll bring

To thrive in this role, you’ll ideally bring:

  • A deep understanding of the Australian economy and macroeconomic policy

  • relevant experience as an economist or strategist in finance, government, research, or related fields

  • Strong analytical capability and experience working with large datasets

  • Advanced technical skills in Excel and statistical software (R or Python)

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distil complex ideas for diverse audiences

  • A collaborative and curious mindset, with a passion for learning and innovation

  • A bachelor’s degree in economics (or equivalent); Honours or postgraduate studies highly regarded
