A Database Administrator I, is responsible for the performance, integrity and security of the databases to support the computing environment. Under direct supervision, a Database Administrator I will work through day-to-day operational tasks related to the database systems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Administer, support, and optimize on-premise PostgreSQL databases (version 9 and above).
Manage high availability configurations, backups, installations, and upgrades.
Write and debug complex SQL queries and scripts; develop rollback and contingency plans.
Work with connection poolers such as PgBouncer and Pgpool to improve application-database efficiency.
Respond to and resolve production issues during scheduled on-call shifts.
Perform maintenance activities and support code deployments during off-hours (nights/weekends as needed).
Track and manage tasks using a formal ticketing system.
Maintain database code, scripts, and configuration in a version control system (e.g., Git, Bitbucket).
Learn and support other RDBMS platforms as needed (MySQL, Oracle, MS SQL).
Collaborate and communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
Support a culture of continuous improvement and uphold company values in all interactions.
Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL in on-prem environments (v9+).
Strong SQL skills and proficiency in troubleshooting, tuning, and rollback planning.
Experience with high availability setups and disaster recovery strategies.
Familiarity with database connection poolers (e.g., PgBouncer, Pgpool).
Comfortable working independently and capable of managing frequent context switching.
Experience working with ticketing systems for task tracking and prioritization.
Proficiency in version control systems (Git, Bitbucket, etc.).
Availability for weekly rotating on-call duty and off-hours maintenance support.
Strong teamwork orientation and willingness to support peers.
SKILLS/EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES
College degree or equivalent experience
3-5 years system administration experience, or application development experience
0-2 years database administration experience
Exceptional problem-solving skills
Above average oral and written communications skills
Willingness to work flexible schedule including nights/weekends
Must work well in a team environment
Must be able to learn independently
