Job description

Primary Responsibilities /Accountabilities/ Essential Functions:

  • Provide technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques and the analysis of results for the faculty and students for the assigned lab courses; answers questions and assists with lab experiment to demonstrate proper use of equipment and/or simulation steps.
  • Perform the timely preparation of materials, chemicals, and equipment for use in student laboratory demonstrations, experiments, exercises, and exams.
  • Perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations.
  • Comply with safety regulations and procedures in lab set up.
  • Comply with proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Assist with assembly and installation of new equipment or instruments; assists with testing to ensure operational readiness.
  • Serve as support to faculty with classroom materials, e.g., set up of videos, etc.; collaborates with subject matter faculty for their assigned courses to ensure labs meet needed learning requirements.
  • Document safety, accident, and other incidents according to established reporting protocols.
  • Prepare various records and reports related to laboratory operations and activities as required.
  • Performs other duties as needed/assigned to support successful lab operations.

Equipment Used and Responsibility

  • Basic knowledge of principles, practices, and equipment of college science/engineering department laboratory program
  • Basic knowledge of subject matter and theoretical principles in chemistry/biology/etc.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, supplies and laboratory methods, practices and techniques used in lab discipline.
  • Ability to correctly and efficiently set up lab equipment and materials used in exercises and experiments.
  • Ability to understand the function of, operate, demonstrate, maintain, troubleshoot, technical instruments.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations involving lab operations and the use of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of basic record keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics.
  • Basic knowledge of proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Ability to perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operation.
  • Ability to provide information and assistance to students and faculty.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical problem solving.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Experience/ Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in assigned lab discipline.
  • 2 years’ experience in lab operations preferred.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of laboratory programs, including reagents, supplies and other materials that would be necessary to sustain a diverse college laboratory program.
  • Experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing analytical instruments in a lab and stockroom setting.
  • Experience in implementing policies and procedures to comply with environment, health, and safety regulations.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
