Organizational Background: Women’s Refugee Commission is a non-profit organization committed to protecting the rights and safety of displaced and migrant women and girls in the US and around the world. To strengthen our communications, enhance our visibility, engage stakeholders, and attract new supporters and donors, we seek to engage a qualified Communications Consultant. The consultant will work closely with the organization’s leadership, development, and program & advocacy teams to manage and enhance our external and internal communications strategies, digital platforms, and donor engagement initiatives.
Scope of Work: The Communications Consultant will provide strategic and operational communications support, including developing and managing a comprehensive social media strategy, coordinating marketing campaigns, maintaining the organization’s website, producing high-quality content, managing an editorial calendar, and facilitating internal information sharing. This role requires frequent and consistent check-ins with the Senior Director of Individual Engagement and Marketing, along with close and consistent contact with the VP of Advocacy and External Relations.
The consultant will also play a key role in donor outreach and public engagement initiatives via the following:
Develop and implement a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with the organization’s mission and goals and which will be focused on expanding our audience to engage a younger and wider audience.
Manage and grow the organization’s presence across social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Instagram).
Design and implement marketing and public awareness campaigns for programs, events, and fundraising initiatives.
Draft and disseminate newsletters, press releases, blog posts, and other promotional materials.
Support donor outreach strategies and initiatives to attract and retain supporters.
Create and maintain an editorial calendar to coordinate campaigns and key content deliverables.
Website Management
Oversee day-to-day management and updates of the organization’s website.
Ensure website content is current, engaging, and aligned with organizational messaging.
Liaise with web developers for technical issues and improvements.
Internal Communications
Facilitate regular internal communications, including drafting internal updates and coordinating staff and project team meetings related to communications priorities.
Develop tools and processes for better information sharing across teams.
Key Deliverables:
A comprehensive social media strategy and monthly content plan.
Monthly analytics reports on social media, website, and campaign performance.
At least 2 social media posts per week across active platforms.
Timely management and updates of website content.
Design and delivery of 2 marketing and public awareness campaigns.
Minutes and action points from internal coordination meetings.
Duration: The consultancy is expected to provide short-term communications coverage for a period of up to 6 months, possibly longer.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in communications, preferably in the non-profit or social impact sector.
Demonstrated experience managing social media, websites, and digital marketing campaigns.
Excellent writing, editing, and content creation skills.
Strong organizational skills, with experience managing editorial calendars and coordinating cross-team activities.
Familiarity with website content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and analytics tools.
Experience in donor communications and fundraising campaigns is an asset.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Location: Remote / Hybrid in NYC or DC
Rate: Compensation based on a budget payable up to 90K based which will be commensurate with experience.
