Job Description

Agilent's Legal Department is seeking an experienced patent attorney to join our growing Intellectual Property team.  The role will support Agilent’s Applied Markets Group (AMG) in the design, development and commercialization of a broad range of complex analytical instrumentation, including spectroscopy (atomic, molecular, raman), gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and related informatics tools, applications, software and knowledge of artificial intelligence.  Responsibilities will include strategic IP planning, competitive patent analysis, product clearance reviews, innovation capture, patent prosecution, transactional support, license negotiation, and business partnering and counseling to address various intellectual property issues.  


Key Responsibilities:  

  • Lead and manage AMG’s intellectual property strategy (patents, know-how, trade secrets) in alignment with the business strategy.  

  • Partner with the business and product teams to harvest innovations and provide intellectual property advice. 

  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate the business on intellectual property matters. 

  • Work with cross-functional teams to support Agilent’s Digital Ecosystem and software and automation development for Enterprise level projects. 

Qualifications
  • JD Degree or equivalent, membership in good standing of the California Bar (or member in good standing of another state).  

  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.  

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline with expertise in analytical instrumentation, software and related technologies. 

  • 10+ years in-house or law firm experience with a strong background in patent application writing and prosecution of mechanical arts, analytical instrumentation and software patents.   

  • Ability to critically review patent applications, manage external patent counsel, and handle various intellectual property matters. 

  • Familiarity with spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography platforms and related instrumentations. 

  • Experience with software for instrument control, data analytics and open-source software development is desirable.  

  • Skilled in managing large, complex patent portfolios, freedom-to-operate searches, product clearance reviews, and competitive landscaping.  

Additional Details

The full-time equivalent pay range for this position is $181,200.00 - $339,750.00/yr plus eligibility for bonus, stock and benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
