About Sandy Hook Promise
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) envisions a future where all children are free from school shootings and other acts of violence. As a national nonprofit organization, SHP’s mission is to educate and empower youth and adults to prevent violence in schools, homes, and communities. Creators of the lifesaving, evidence-informed Know the Signs prevention programs, SHP teaches the warning signs of someone who may be in crisis, socially isolated, or at-risk of hurting themselves or others and how to get help. SHP also advances school safety, youth mental health, and responsible gun ownership at the state and federal levels through nonpartisan policy and partnerships.  

SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

About the Role
The Manager, Communications will play a key role in shaping and executing content strategies that support SHP’s mission. This position will be responsible for managing content development, organizing and curating stories and archives, and ensuring consistent messaging across multiple platforms. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor, highly organized, and passionate about using communications to drive social change.  

This role reports to the Director of Communications and interacts regularly across departments to support organizational reach and engagement goals.  

Location
We are a U.S.-based organization and most of our staff work remotely. This role will require less than 15% travel on an as-needed basis.

Job Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
  • Write, edit, and proofread a wide range of content, including stories, campaign materials, advocacy messages, and research summaries. 
  • Copyedit and quality-check communications, content, and program curriculum materials to ensure clarity, consistency, and accuracy. 
  • Support internal messaging and communications to ensure alignment across teams and channels. 
  • Maintain and improve systems for organizing, archiving, and repurposing content for ease of access and strategic reuse. 
  • Collaborate on the creation and upkeep of program and curriculum materials to keep content relevant and up to date. 
  • Develop messaging to support SHP programs, policy efforts, and campaigns, tailored to key audiences. 
  • Contribute to planning and execution of campaigns that drive engagement and program participation. 
  • Track and analyze content and campaign performance, offering insights to inform strategy. 
  • Manage outbound communications such as email and text messaging with clear, accurate, and actionable content. 
  • Identify opportunities for awards, partnerships, and influencers to increase SHP’s visibility, reach, and impact. 
Desired Skills and Experience
  • A commitment to SHP's vision and values.
  • At least 5 years of experience in communications, content development, or a closely related field. 
  • Proven ability to write, edit, and proofread high-quality content with clarity, consistency, and accuracy. 
  • Demonstrated experience managing content systems, story banks, and/or libraries for easy access and reuse. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. 
  • Solid understanding of nonprofit communications, advocacy, or education-related content strategies. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and content or document management tools. 
  • Experience with email marketing platforms, digital communication tools, and Wordpress is a plus. (e.g., CRMs, CMSs). 
  • Clear communicator and team player, able to synthesize multiple inputs and translate into effective messaging and communication assets. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance across all content types. 
  • Performs other duties as required.
Benefits and Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000.
(SHP follows a strict internal rubric to help guide salary placement and ensure equitable pay amongst new hires and current staff. New hires should expect to be brought on at the start of the range, except in extenuating circumstances.)

Our organization operates within a distributed workforce, allowing for location flexibility across the country for most positions. We provide remote office support for all staff, which includes a laptop, home office reimbursement, monthly Wi-Fi reimbursement up to $40, and monthly cell phone reimbursement up to $50.
