Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Office of Financial Services is seeking a dedicated and skilled Staff Accountant to work in cooperation with Financial Services staff, other college staff and faculty, students, and external service providers such as banks and auditors, to carry out functions of the Financial Services Department. This role will support the accounting and reconciliation processes of the Financial Services Department.  The position requires excellent computer skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, both oral and written communication skills, and integrity.  Duties include but are not limited to processing, analyzing, and understanding financial transactions, reconciling general ledger accounts, and special projects. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend hours are required as needed.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Monthly reconciliation of assigned general ledger accounts such as cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, debt, credit cards, purchase cards, etc.
  • Quarterly reconciliation of grants.
  • Proposes, prepares, and enters journal entries.
  • Prepares and enters budget transfers requested by departments; responds to requests for information.
  • Maintains and files reconciliation work papers, journal entries, reports, etc. on paper and/or electronic media.
  • Verifies and processes transmission of gifts from the Office of Advancement.
  • Cross-trains with other Financial Services staff to provide support during staff absences.
  • Answer telephone, prepares correspondence, maintains filing, and other administrative duties.
  • Prepares and mails miscellaneous invoices to outside parties on a quarterly basis.
  • Position may require out-of-state, overnight travel for software training.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Controller.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • Associate’s degree in accounting or closely related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of practical accounting experience in higher education or not-for-profit setting; experience in general ledger accounting in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Must have experience in reconciling general ledger accounts and the month-end close process; financial reporting experience is preferred.
  • Must have a clear understanding of accounting principles and how debits and credits work.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel, and Microsoft Teams; experience with Microsoft Access is desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
