Reports to: Senior Director - Immunology

Role Overview:

The Medical Field Team Leader is responsible for both Medial Science Liaison and Medical Education Associates daily operations through capacity/personnel management, staff development, project and business planning/management, and cross-functional communication across teams based in the UK/ROI. This is a field based role focused on development through frequent 1:1 interactions, coaching, field visits and transparent feedback. The Medical Field Team Leader ensures staff compliance with applicable laws, local guidelines and Lilly policies and procedures. Also ensures that the deliverables within the assigned area of responsibility are produced on time, on budget and with quality, in close alignment with the Senior Medical Director, therapy area leads and other members of the medical leadership team.


Primary Responsibilities:

1. Effective People Management and Development

  • Supervise direct reports and facilitate performance management, personnel development, and career development through frequent 1:1 interactions, coaching (in line with the principles of Value Based Interactions), field visits and transparent feedback. On average, 60% of time should focus on coaching interactions with the team.
  • Ensure staff compliance with Lilly Corporate, Medical, Regulatory and other standards, procedures, and other internal and external business and compliance requirements, including training requirements.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the required training for new and existing staff, reflecting scientific content skills needed for successful Scientific Expert interactions and functional expertise. 
  • Participate in and represent staff in succession planning activities, talent assessment, merit pay, promotion processes, and reward and recognition activities to retain and motivate staff.
  • Recruit for staff positions to meet business needs while leveraging diverse global talent pool.
  • Create a culture of accountability, excellence, and integrity.

2. Manage Field and Customer facing Operations – Maximizing Operational Effectiveness and Team Performance

  • Oversee geographical management and MSL/MEA commitment and effectiveness in developing and maintaining relationships with Scientific Experts (SE) and other external customers.
  • Ensure team compliance with applicable laws, local guidelines and Lilly policies and procedures.
  • Oversee upload and certification of materials for the field team ensuring the Materials Lifecycle Process is followed.
  • Create and execute strategic plans to optimise team performance, maintain appropriate records of field activities and ensure an appropriate balance between therapy areas.
  • Identify, develop and implement specific initiatives to enhance the team’s medical expertise, improve team dynamics, boost efficiency and achieve overall objectives.
  • Support field teams by attending Regional meetings.
  • Ensure close collaboration and alignment with therapy area leaders, therapeutic area CRP/CRS and other therapy area MSL/MEA leads.

3. Establish and Maintain Effective Communication and Partnerships

  • Oversee collection and communication of scientific intelligence, clinical insights and other field input to better inform decision making by internal partners.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and partnerships with field medical and cross functional colleagues to leverage team’s expertise and appropriately support strategic objectives and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with functional capabilities leader, operations manager and other members of Medical leadership team to share best practices.
  • Build and maintain long term relationships with key internal and external business partners, supporting and driving organisational change and learning, anticipating future trends/needs, implementing sourcing strategies, strengthening current and future capabilities/tools/technology.

4. Customer and Business Planning

  • Partner with the Medical Director and associated CRP/CRS to align strategies and priorities as part of planning process.
  • Collaborate to ensure appropriate resources are obtained for team activities and operational needs.
  • Oversee medical brand budget in conjunction with the Medical Director and other relevant partners.

5. Other Medical Activities

  • Special Projects as needed.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Advance degree or strong background in medical affairs, healthcare or clinical development.

  • Previous experience in or advanced knowledge of the MSL and MEA functional roles, responsibilites and capabilities.

  • Experience in a field based/customer facing environment.

  • Working knowledge of compliance issues, the ABPI code and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience in coaching of field based teams and developing scientific/technical personnel. Ability to provide management, coaching, team building, relationship building, and develop technical staff.

  • Strong leadership, management, interpersonal, problem-solving, negotiation, influencing, motivational, project management, and critical thinking skills with ability to use effectively in a team, cross-functional and global environment.

  • Ability to develop and implement strategy across people, processes, tools, and organizations.

  • Strong knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, clinical development process, and scientific communities.

  • High learning agility with ability to be flexible, adaptable, and to manage multiple, often conflicting, projects and teams and bring to successful resolution in a constantly changing business environment.

  • Ability to establish a clear understanding of the distinct accountabilities and expectations of direct reports.


Additional Information/Preferences:

  • Previous field medical experience.

  • Previous experience in Immunology (dermatology, gastroenterology, rheumatology).

  • Prior manager-level or equivalent experience.

  • This is a field based position and requires the ability to travel frequently. On average, 60% of time should focus on coaching interactions with the team. Applicants must be located in the UK and have access to a transport hub (airport/train station).
