Job Summary

A Senior Underwriting Counsel evaluates risk and determines insurability of high-liability and high-risk transactions, ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and manages complex underwriting. This role involves collaborating with various departments, including risk management, claims, and policy development, to support the organization's underwriting operations and our business partners.

Job Description

  • Responsible for evaluating risk and exposures on high liability and high-risk transactions to determine insurability.
  • Effectively communicates underwriting solutions to agents, direct offices, and counsel.
  • Promptly responds to inquiries and requests.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and rate manuals. 
  • Leads special projects as assigned.
  • Conducts seminars and training at industry event and for internal and external customers.
  • Supports business partners.

Baseline Criteria

  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws affecting title insurance and real property and the coverage in title insurance policies and endorsements.
  • Superior ability to fashion creative resolutions to complex issues.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and create a positive work environment and cultivate strong relationships with customers and team members.
  • Excellent listener.
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Working knowledge of business and best practices gained through understanding of Stewart’s goals and key initiatives and experience. 
  • Individual contributor working with limited oversight.
  • Takes initiative – proactive.

Experience

  • Attorney should have at least ten years working in the real property field.
