Position Overview
We are seeking a thoughtful, collaborative, and solution-oriented Counsel, Privacy and Innovation to join our growing Legal & Compliance team. This individual will serve as a key legal advisor on global data privacy and protection matters, particularly in support of our clinical trial site operations, data-driven initiatives, and emerging business lines. 
 
The ideal candidate brings extensive experience with GDPR, solid knowledge of U.S. federal and state privacy laws, experience with HIPAA, and is comfortable navigating a fast-paced, international, and innovation-driven environment. This role requires both strategic and tactical involvement in privacy governance, compliance, data contracting, and cross-functional collaboration on licensing, regulatory, and technology matters. The successful candidate will be a skilled writer, a responsive legal partner able to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the business, and must be able to evaluate risk, proactively develop risk-appropriate solutions to achieve business objectives while complying with applicable law and mitigating risk, and assist in supporting business implementation in an evolving environment. 

What You'll Be Working On (Duties include but not limited to):
  • Privacy Law
  • Privacy Law Expertise: Provide strategic and practical legal advice on global privacy and data protection laws, including GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA/CPRA, and other U.S. state and federal privacy laws. Experience with GCPR and HIPAA mandatory. 
  • Clinical Support: Partner with clinical and operations teams to advise on privacy and data protection matters related to clinical research activities, including cross-border data transfers, site operations, and subject data rights. 
  • Contracting & Transactions: Draft, review, and negotiate data processing agreements, data transfer agreements, data sections of clinical trial agreements, licensing deals, and other contracts involving company, personal or sensitive data. 
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Act as a trusted legal advisor to teams across the company to develop practical, risk-adjusted solutions that enable innovation and support compliance. 
  • Emerging Technologies: Support legal risk assessments and compliance for emerging technologies involving personal data. 

  • Innovation Matters
  • Licensing & IP: Contribute to legal review of IP licensing arrangements, commercial transactions, and research collaborations. 
  • Regulatory Support: Provide support on broader regulatory and compliance matters, including healthcare, research ethics, and evolving privacy frameworks in the U.S. and abroad. 
  • Business Enablement: Proactively support and advise emerging business lines and new initiatives to drive business growth while mitigating risk. 
  • Other Duties: Perform other legal tasks and special projects as assigned by legal leadership.

  • Physical Requirements:
  • This role requires 100% of work to be performed in a remote office environment and requires the ability to use keyboards and other computer equipment.  

  • Travel Requirements:
  • This is a remote position with less than 10% travel requirements. Occasional planned travel may be required as part of the role.

  • Experience advising on clinical trials, healthcare, or life sciences privacy matters strongly preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating privacy-related and commercial contracts. 
  • Strong working knowledge of international data protection law frameworks, particularly in Europe and North America. 
  • Experience with intellectual property (copyrights, trade secrets, and trademarks), technology licensing, and regulatory law is a plus. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a practical, problem-solving mindset. 
  • Business-minded, collaborative, and able to manage complex issues across jurisdictions with professionalism and good judgment. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a self-directed remote environment.  
  • Proper home office set-up including a private space for legal communication and high-speed internet (at minimum: 100MB up and 15 MB down, 5 GHz router). 
  • High attention to detail.   
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • For this position, you must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship for a non-immigrant visa. 

  • Certifications, Education, and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution. 
  • 3-6+ years of legal experience, including substantive GDPR experience and direct involvement in HIPAA and U.S. privacy law. 

  • Licenses:
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state in the United States and eligible for in-house corporate practice in state of residence. 
  • CIPP or other similar certifications preferred.
