POSITION LOCATION: Canada (remote)

REPORTS TO: Senior Manager, Communications

CONTRACT TERM: Indeterminate

SALARY LEVEL: PRO 1 (CAD 53,000-62,000)

LANGUAGES Fluency in both English and French required

BACKGROUND

WUSC is a Canadian global development organization working to catalyze positive education and economic outcomes for young people. We bring together and collaborate with a diverse network of partners (including students, volunteers, schools, governments, not-for-profits, and businesses) who share this mission. Together, we influence systems change, and foster inclusive, youth-centered solutions that enable young people to thrive and belong. We work with all young people, with a focus on women and displaced populations. WUSC currently operates in 28 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as in Canada, with an annual budget of approximately CAD $65 million. Our global team includes over 100 staff in Canada and more than 250 staff internationally, implementing a diverse portfolio of development projects in collaboration with numerous multilateral and bilateral donors, and philanthropic foundations.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Senior Manager, Communications, the Communications Officer will be responsible for generating and reviewing content to ensure high-quality, bilingual communications. This dynamic role requires a talented and detail-oriented individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and has a passion for writing and crafting clear, compelling content in both English and French. You will write, edit, and proofread materials, ensuring consistency and accuracy while maintaining the brand’s voice and tone. Additionally, you will translate key content, support a global team with communication resources, and help uphold high standards across print, web, and social media.


Corporate Communications

  • Support the development, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing improvement of WUSC’s corporate editorial calendar across a variety of communications channels, in English and French (e.g. annual report, website, blog, email, social media and multimedia).
  • Research, write, produce, and edit a variety of high-quality communications products about WUSC’s work and thematic issues of focus for a variety of channels (e.g. annual report, blogs, etc) and in a variety of formats (e.g. written, audio, video).


Project Communications

  • Participate in the communications community of practice (composed of WUSC staff and volunteers in Canada and overseas), creating resources and developing workshops to help build team capacity to craft compelling communications products and surface high-quality stories and resources to meet our organizational communications objectives.
  • Monitor project and country communications materials to ensure they accurately represent WUSC (verbally and visually) and contribute to the better positioning of WUSC as a leader in our field, globally.

Bilingual Communications Quality Assurance

  • Oversee quality control for all bilingual communications published across corporate channels (print, web, social media), ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to inclusive writing standards.
  • Proofread and validate documents translated by colleagues, external vendors, and machine translation tools, maintaining linguistic accuracy and brand consistency in all French-language materials.
  • Provide quality control for French internal communications (including all staff emails, policies and resources.)


Translation

  • Translate select shorter communication products, including speaking notes and social media content ensuring message accuracy and maintaining consistency in tone while adhering to language conventions and using inclusive writing.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

Education

  • University degree in a related field


Experience & Competencies

  • Three to five years of experience in communications. Experience working for a non-profit and/or in international development is preferred.
  • Superior research, writing, and editing skills in English and French is essential.
  • Subject matter expertise/ familiarity with WUSC programming areas preferred.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Google Suite) is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Very organized with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work with and protect confidential information


Languages

  • Complete fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.
