Position Summary

The People, Culture and Belonging (PCB) Director will report to the Administrative Director (AD) and serve as a key member of the executive leadership team. This position has program-level decision-making authority and is responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of Native Movement's organizational culture, grounded in Indigenous values, guiding principles, and commitment to holistic wellbeing. The PCB Director will oversee the development, budget management, and implementation of systems, policies, and practices that honor all forms of labor—emotional, cultural, physical, mental, and spiritual—while fostering relationships of radical trust. The PCB Director demonstrates expert-level knowledge in Indigenous approaches to organizational development, supervises a dedicated team, and manages confidential personnel information with the highest integrity. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring Native Movement's internal practices reflect the same principles of decolonization, justice, and respect that we advocate for in our external work, while navigating complex Alaska-specific contexts in our approach to people and culture work.

 

Essential Job Function

People Support and Development

  • Oversee the implementation of equitable and transparent hiring processes that prioritize Alaska Native candidates and those with lived experience in Native communities.

  • Guide the development of onboarding processes that effectively communicate our values, culture, and ways of working.

  • Collaborate with the People Support Manager to ensure compliance with relevant employment laws while maintaining alignment with our values.

  • Develop systems that recognize and honor all forms of labor and contributions.

  • Design and implement staff development opportunities that foster continuous growth and reciprocal knowledge sharing.

 

Healing and Wellness Leadership

  • Partner with the Healing and Wellness Manager to create and maintain workplace practices that prioritize holistic wellbeing.

  • Ensure adequate resources are allocated for staff rest, wellness activities, and cultural practices.

  • Foster a culture that acknowledges the impacts of historical and ongoing colonial trauma and supports individual and collective healing.

  • Develop and implement policies that center care and recognize that personal wellbeing is foundational to meaningful work and community impact.

 

Organizational Culture and Belonging

  • Lead initiatives to deepen organizational understanding and practice of our core values and guiding principles.

  • Create spaces for authentic feedback, addressing systems of privilege and oppression within our organization.

  • Facilitate conflict transformation processes that honor relationships and Indigenous approaches to harmony.

  • Ensure organizational practices acknowledge the contradictions inherent in doing movement work within capitalist systems, with ongoing assessment to better align with our values.

 

Staff Supervision

  • Provide direct supervision to the PCB team.

  • Ensure the PCB team has the support, resources, and guidance needed to fulfill their responsibilities.

  • Model and promote our values of radical trust, believing each person brings their full capacity and commitment to their role.

  • Facilitate regular team meetings and individual check-ins that foster authentic accountability and ongoing growth.

 

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the Native Movement Executive Leadership team, participating in organization-wide strategic planning and decision-making.

  • Advise on organizational structure, staffing needs, and resource allocation to ensure alignment with our values.

  • Collaborate with other directors to identify and address cross-team challenges and opportunities.

 

Non-Essential Job Functions

● Additional or shifted responsibilities to be identified as the organization evolves.

● Participate in community education activities related to workplace culture and Indigenous values.

● Some travel to other Alaska locations as needed to support team connections and relationship building.

 

Independent Decision-Making

Make routine job-related decisions. Decisions based on values, goals and budgetary constraints of the organization.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised

This position will report to the Administrative Director. Additionally, this position supervises two to three PCB staff members. Remote supervision may be required.

 

Work Environment and Demands of the Role

This position will work primarily on-site in the Anchorage office. Generally, the office environment is calm, with some days of higher activity due to organizational events. Some noise from people in the office is expected, and may increase during events. We are a family-friendly workplace, so children of all ages may be present at any time. Dogs are allowed in the office, so there may be occasional barking and dogs walking throughout the building. This position may require travel within the state. Possibility of a flexible schedule and may need to be available for evenings and/or weekends..

 

The physical demands of this position require the ability to occasionally remain in a stationary position, move or traverse throughout an office and event spaces. Occasionally must be able to transport objects through the office for various needs. Must be able to commute to and from an office and event space. Requires the ability to ascend a flight of stairs several times a day. Additionally, the employee must be able to exchange information and ideas so that others will understand, receive and understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, and exercise independent judgment.
