Position Overview

The Executive Director of Engineering will oversee the engineering department, ensuring that our teams meet project deadlines while delivering high-quality products. This role requires a strategic leader with extensive technical expertise, strong management skills, and the ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization. The Executive Director of Engineering will report to the Chief Operating Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Oversight: Deep technical understanding of overall tech stack and code base (including ML algorithms), enhancing code quality by reviewing code before deployment, mentoring the team on the best coding and development practices, ensuring appropriate code documentation
  • Team Management: Lead and mentor a diverse set of engineering teams (front-end, back-end, data science and data analysis positions, fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability to meet project deadlines and deliverables.
  • Recruitment & Onboarding: Oversee the recruitment process, ensuring the acquisition of top talent to build a high-performing engineering team. Create a detailed technical plan for onboarding engineering hires
  • Security and Compliance: Build a holistic compliance, security and monitoring framework for the company, while facilitating the attainment of relevant certifications and compliance standards in 2025.
  • Research & Best Practices: Conduct and apply research on industry trends and best practices to improve engineering processes and product development.
  • Communication: Serve as a liaison between engineering teams and executive leadership, providing updates on project status, challenges, and opportunities.

Prerequisites

  • Strong understanding of relevant programming languages, tools, and methodologies (e.g. Python, Kubernetes, Microservices Architecture, etc).
  • Strong understanding of cloud technologies, software architecture, and system design. Proficiency with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS and Databricks).
  • Strong understanding of relevant security, compliance, and data protection best practices.

Hard Skills

  • Programming Languages: Strong Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++, JavaScript) and familiarity with software development frameworks and tools.
  • Architecture & Design: Strong experience with system architecture, microservices, APIs, and data modeling and design.
  • Project Management: Proficient in project management tools (e.g., Jira) and experience with Agile SDLC methodologies including SCRUM.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: Ability to analyze data and metrics to inform engineering decisions and improve processes.

Soft Skills

  • Analytical & Strategic Mindset: Ability to assess complex situations and develop effective strategies.
  • Multitasking: Capable of balancing multiple responsibilities and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is typically required; a Master’s degree is a plus. This position must have 10-15 years of experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership position at a technology-focused SaaS company. Experience in the health-tech sector preferred.
  • Technical Experience: Extensive experience in software development, quality assurance, and familiarity with relevant engineering tools and methodologies. Strategic thinker with the ability to align data and AI initiatives with broader business objectives. Ability to develop and implement long-term strategies that align with business objectives and drive technological advancements.
  • Team Management: Proven ability to manage and inspire teams to meet deadlines and achieve project goals. Deep experience as an engineering leader of a high-growth SaaS startup. Demonstrated success in scaling engineering teams and delivering complex projects on time and within budget. Experience working cross-functionally with product, engineering, marketing, and business leaders to deliver impactful, data-driven solutions
  • Budget Preparation: Experience in preparing, presenting, and implementing budgets effectively.
  • Research Knowledge: Understanding of best practices for conducting and applying product and market research.
  • Communication Skills: Comfortable communicating with executive leadership as well as direct reports, ensuring transparency and collaboration.
  • Leadership Skills: Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to scale, inspire and motivate teams.
