ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Manager, Observability & Automation to lead the evolution of our monitoring, alerting, and automation capabilities during an exciting period of transformation. Reporting directly to the Director, Network, Voice, & Observability, you will be at the forefront of our transition to a new Managed Service Provider (MSP) and the launch of our 24/7/365 Operations Center. You will also be responsible for leading a team of 3-5 seasoned engineers, ensuring their growth and development. This role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of our hybrid IT infrastructure as we support and scale our rapidly expanding business.

Core Responsibilities for this Role:

  • Observability Leadership
  • Lead the deployment, management, and maintenance of observability platforms to monitor critical infrastructure, utilizing tools like NPM, NCM, APM, SAM, NTA, and Packet Brokers to observe and analyze traffic and infrastructure.
  • Integrate observability solutions with ServiceNow ITOM for event correlation and automatic incident ticket generation.
  • Collaborate with the Service Management Team to ensure accurate and up-to-date data in the CMDB (Configuration Management Database).
  • Manage and optimize the monitoring of systems, ensuring that all critical infrastructure is effectively monitored, and that appropriate teams are notified promptly in case of outages.
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure observability systems support the organization’s operational requirements and provide actionable insights into performance, availability, and security.
  • Automation Initiatives:

  • Lead the deployment and management of automation platforms such as Terraform, Ansible, and CloudFormation, ensuring smooth automation of infrastructure provisioning and management.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts in alignment with organizational needs, working proactively and in response to requests from internal teams.
  • Ensure that automation workflows and scripts are optimized, efficient, and aligned with engineering best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to determine automation requirements, aligning engineering efforts with business needs and maximizing the use of engineering time.
  • Collaboration & Leadership:

  • Foster cross-team collaboration to determine task and monitoring priorities, ensuring that critical infrastructure is handled expeditiously and effectively.
  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of observability and automation engineers, driving performance and professional development.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to understand infrastructure monitoring and automation needs, ensuring that the team delivers solutions that meet requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and a proven track record of managing and optimizing integration, deployment, and automated testing throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure as code (IaC) practices, with hands-on experience using tools like Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, and Jenkins.
  • Proficiency in version control systems such as GitHub and Bitbucket, ensuring secure and efficient code management and collaboration.
  • Solid knowledge of programming concepts and languages, including Python, PowerShell, YAML, and JSON.
  • Expertise in observability tools like NPM, NCM, APM, SAM, NTA, and Packet Broker platforms, with a focus on integrating monitoring solutions with ITSM tools like ServiceNow.
  • Experience with cross-team collaboration, effectively determining task and monitoring priorities to ensure critical infrastructure and incidents are handled with urgency and precision.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in managing teams, mentoring engineers, and driving performance and collaboration.
