Platform - UX - Product Designer, Design Systems (EUI)

What is The Role:

We are looking for a talented and detail-oriented Design System Designer to help create, maintain, and improve our design system for our B2B data-intensive interfaces for data analysis and management. You will work closely with product designers, engineers, and solution stakeholders to ensure a consistent, functional and user-friendly design language across our platform. Your expertise will ensure that the design system meets the needs of both our users and internal engineering teams.

Our design system, known as Elastic User Interface, or ‘EUI’ for short, is open source and used by hundreds of engineers in their daily work. Available at https://eui.elastic.co/#/ 

This role reports into the Design Director - Platform as part of a larger Platform solution design team of ~15 designers. You will be working closely with two other designers within the Global experiences area of the Kibana Platform - supporting two engineering teams - EUI and Shared UX, managed by a single PM. 

You are curious to learn and capable of coding. You are not a developer, but you can speak the language and are comfortable writing HTML and CSS. You desire to craft user experiences for complex products and have collaborated with product managers and engineers.

What You Will Be Doing:

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive design system that includes UI components, patterns, style guides, figma design toolkits and documentation.
• Collaborate with product and UI/UX designers to create scalable design solutions for web
• Work closely with engineering teams to ensure seamless implementation of design system components.
• Ensure consistency in visual language, interaction design, and accessibility across the platform.
• Create and maintain detailed design documentation for designers and developers.
• Contribute to the evolution of the design system by identifying areas for improvement and implementing best practices.
• Conduct usability tests to refine design system components.
• Enable internal partners through clear guidelines, shaping working practises, design deliverables, and creative problem-solving
• Your diplomatic personality allows you to walk the tightrope between giving platform orientated expert recommendations whilst bringing solution requirements into your design thinking

What You Bring:

• Structured systems thinking, with the ability to break down molecules into atoms. Ideally you have experience working on design systems for complex B2B or technical products.
• Balances the big-picture vision of design systems with a pragmatic, iterative approach—delivering solutions that are elegant, feasible, and future-ready.
• Strong understanding of design principles, UI/UX, and responsive design.
• Strong interaction, IA and visual design skills
• Proficiency in design tools - we use Figma and Figjam
• Understanding of accessibility standards and how to implement them within a design system.
• Knowledgeable about front-end development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
• Familiarity with Git/Github - you are comfortable running a local development environment, reviewing and commenting on Pull requests, and contributing layout and style changes to a codebase.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with designers, engineers, and stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively convey ideas in groups and clearly explain your design decisions
• You are an organised self-starter and able to adapt to work across timezones. Asynchronous updates help in our remote set-up and even oversharing aids alignment with your team across the globe
• You are passionate about latest design and technology trends and adopt modern techniques, as appropriate
