Position Description

The Marketing & Communications Intern will join a mission-driven team dedicated to making service years an opportunity for all young Americans. Service Year Alliance is seeking a Marketing & Communications Intern to join our team to build awareness of our mission, and our organization’s strategy and impact. This is a growth-focused internship and is ideal for someone looking to gain professional experience in managing social media platforms, writing creative copy, and researching the latest marketing trends. Reporting to the Director, Communications, the intern will gain experience in public relations, digital communications, including creating content for social media and email newsletters, conducting research related to our communications strategy and organizational priorities, participating in team meetings, and sharing and presenting ideas and feedback with the full team. This position is part-time and fully remote. While this person should expect to work virtually, and we’re willing to be flexible for the selected candidate’s scheduling requirements, Service Year Alliance’s team generally holds eastern time working hours. This is a paid summer internship that starts in early June and will conclude in early August, with an option to extend into the fall.  

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Writing: 
    • Assist with writing compelling content for multiple social media platforms, email newsletters, and press releases.
    • Draft content for the Service Year Alliance website.
  • Social Media Management: 
    • Manage a content calendar for multiple social media platforms. 
    • Monitor social media platforms and recommend opportunities to engage with our audience.
    • Help design new cross-platform social media campaigns.
  • Design Support: 
    • Assist with graphic design for marketing materials using Canva.
    • Align creative content with the organization’s brand guidelines.
  • Research: 
    • Conduct market research to identify new trends, audience insights, and opportunities for community engagement.
    • Assist Service Year Alliance team in conducting research associated with our primary bodies of work and opportunities to share this work externally.
  • Metrics and Analytics:
    • Assist in gathering and analyzing data to evaluate the effectiveness of communications and marketing campaigns.
    • Manage performance dashboards for the primary communications channels.
    • Analyze data to share recommendations to strengthen our communications.


Qualifications:

  • At least one year of college and/or previous internship or professional experience in marketing and communications. 
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Extensive professional or personal experience using social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and interest in social media trends and emerging platforms.
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) is a plus.
  • Creatively approaches projects and assignments — you should be excited to try new things and not afraid to take risks
  • Deep belief in service years to tackle our most pressing challenges, transform the lives of those who serve, and change the course of our country.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, represent Service Year Alliance in a professional manner, flexibility, and a curiosity mindset.
  • Possess an understanding of cultural competence and ability to adjust communication style to appropriately work in multiple cultural environments.
  • Strong learning mindset — we are always adjusting and looking for ways to improve.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative — managing projects from start to finish.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Creative, self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Desired skills:

  • Basic knowledge of Google suite 
  • Experience using Canva and/or Adobe Suite 
  • Video editing experience a plus
