Job description

Compassion & Choices is seeking a Sr. Digital Communications Specialist (Fundraising) to help advance our digital marketing and fundraising efforts across the country.

 

This position is primarily responsible for implementing the digital communication tactics for Compassion & Choices marketing and fundraising efforts. The Senior Digital Communications Specialist assists the Digital Fundraising Manager in creating, implementing, and reporting out on major campaign initiatives, sustainer and membership programs, peer-to-peer fundraising programs, and other marketing initiatives as needed. The position supports Compassion & Choices’ overall fundraising efforts, collaborates with the Philanthropy department as needed, and works towards the success of the annual digital department fundraising goal set by the National Director of Digital Strategy.

 

This is a full-time, remotely-located, paid position reporting to the Digital Fundraising Manager. Compensation offered will be commensurate with experience. This position will primarily be responsible for:

  • The conception, implementation, and analyzing of integrated digital communications and marketing plans for fundraising campaigns and programs.
  • Implementing strategies to acquire new supporters through digital channels specific to fundraising priorities.
  • Working with the Digital, Communications, and Philanthropy teams to identify opportunities, synergies, and strategies that promote Compassion & Choices fundraising and marketing activities. 
  • Updating editorial calendar with digital fundraising initiatives and tactics weekly.
  • Writing copy and managing intra- and inter-departmental production and approval workflows for digital assets (e.g. email, blogs, social posts, digital forms, text-campaigns, newsletters) and publishing those materials in a timely and effective manner.
  • Building, editing, and scheduling emails, social media, text-messaging campaigns, and web content as needed.
  • Supporting the Digital Fundraising Manager in one-off emails, webinar support, and other technical support as needed.
  • Managing one-major campaign strategy each fiscal year.
  • Managing external vendors and contractors as needed.
  • Supporting digital advocacy, engagement, and leadership communications as needed when approved by the Digital Fundraising Manager or National Director of Digital Strategy.
  • Supporting database digital team with email list management, email automations and auto-responders, email segmentation, and reporting as needed.
  • Working to ensure content is accessible, meets all US Marketing law standards, follows W3C compliance, and meets internal quality control standards.
  • Assisting the digital marketing team with email checklists weekly.
  • Attending weekly digital team meetings, 1:1 meetings with supervisor, and project meetings as needed.
  • Pulling weekly and periodic reports for tactical approaches and fundraising efforts.
  • Serving as an ambassador for the Digital department at internal strategy and coalition meetings, and staying current on substantive developments in the end-of-life care movement by reading the latest literature, attending meetings, and maintaining contact with relevant sources.
  • Timely and accurate completion of related reports (such as “P card”, performance reviews, etc.). 
  • Ensuring communications products are always respectful, culturally competent, and inclusive.
  • Demonstrating commitment to and active support of Compassion & Choices’ Diversity & Inclusion program.
  • Supporting of all Compassion & Choices efforts as requested; including, but not limited to, activities such as identifying prospects, briefing donors, alerting staff of fundraising opportunities, reaching out to donors, participating in phone-a-thons, etc. 
  • Attending annual/bi-annual in-person all-staff gathering.

Required Qualifications (You will be a good fit if you have the following):

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Digital Communication, Marketing, Communications, Business, Computer Science or related field is preferred, but not required — or an equivalency of related experience and/or education may be considered.
  • A minimum of 2 years work or relative lived experience with at least half of that time related to political or issue advocacy work.
  • A minimum of 2 years work or relative lived experience with at least half of that time related to email marketing and/or fundraising.

Skills:

  • Language Skills: 
    • Ability to write emails, talking points, articles, ads, social media content, text messages, web copy, marketing plans, and other necessary materials that conform to prescribed style and format and that motivate new and existing supporters to engage in the end-of-life choice movement.
    • Ability to distill complex messaging and political jargon into user-friendly marketing language that can be understood at a 5th-grade reading level.
    • Ability to spell-check and provide basic grammar edits.
    • AP style editing experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to define problems, apply inductive and deductive reasoning, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
    • Ability to do simple mathematical calculations to show campaign and tactical communications findings.
  • Computer Skills:
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of EveryAction/Bonterra or similar CRM/Email Platform (Salesforce, Marketo, Hubspot, etc), basic HTML/CSS, Project Management software, Google suite, MS Office, Slack or other communications tools, excel/Google sheets or similar data software.
    • Understanding of basic computer functions, troubleshooting, saving files into different formats, opening programs, file management, etc.
  • Creativity Skills:
    • Ability to brainstorm on creative copy for branding, tag-lines, marketing copy, and more that engages, intrigues, informs, and inspires donors to give.
    • Keen eye for design and ability to provide helpful critique and feedback for design staff members.
