About the role
The Installations & Commissioning Engineer will be responsible for in-property and site-based activities, focusing on the installation, retrofitting, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Insite Credit & PrePayment metering systems to support heat networks. This role ensures efficient system performance, compliance with industry standards, and seamless integration with existing infrastructure. Additionally, the engineer will provide technical support, diagnose faults, and collaborate with stakeholders to optimise system reliability and functionality.
Key Responsibilities
1. Installation, Setup, and Commissioning:
- Install and commission Insite IT and PAYG smart metering systems on construction and residential sites.
- Configure and maintain Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) systems, including dataloggers, gateways, repeaters, routers, and IP power down plugs.
- Retrofitting including domestic wiring of pre existing Credit & PrePayment metering systems
- Ensure all systems are functioning correctly and meet required specifications.
2. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose and resolve issues related to smart metering systems, including RF networks and associated equipment.
- Perform regular maintenance and callouts for field-based IT and PAYG smart metering systems.
- Liaise with 3rd party providers such as cloud service providers, BT, ISPs, and contractors to ensure smooth operation.
3. Technical Support and Training:
- Provide technical advice and support to internal teams and external clients.
- Conduct training sessions to ensure all team members and clients are proficient in system use and maintenance.
4. Health & Safety:
- Take responsibility for personal, team and customer safety at all times.
- Adhere to all client site safety regulations and company health and safety policies.
- Ensure all site activities meet safety standards and supervise subcontractors where necessary.
5. Client and Stakeholder Communication:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for site contacts, clients, and contractors regarding system issues and resolutions.
- Provide regular updates on project status, system performance, and any issues that arise.
- Represent the company in a professional manner, ensuring all communications reflect the company's values and standards.
6. General Duties:
- Demonstrate a customer-focused mindset and strive for excellence in service delivery.
- Be accountable for maintaining high standards of workmanship and take pride in the quality of your work.
- Manage stock and tools efficiently by following company procedures.
- Respond to ad-hoc tasks and instructions from management as needed.
- Be willing to work across departments and assist in other areas when installation work is less available.
- Occasionally work outside of normal business hours or on weekends when required.
7. Revenue Management:
- Enhance revenue through efficient management of installations, stock control, for timely invoicing additional work and equipment recharges.
- Ensure accurate booking in and out of stock, in line with company procedures, to maintain operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Other Requirements
- Willingness to travel to different sites and work in varying environments.
- Available for occasional out-of-hours or weekend work as required.
- Be available to travel across the UK with occasional working week and overnight stays.
Work Environment and Schedule

Primary Location: Field-based, with occasional meetings in the London (WeWork, Moor Place) and Peterborough (Stuart House) offices.

Travel Requirements: Available to travel across the UK, including occasional working weeks away from home and overnight stays.
- Working Hours:
- 37.5 hours per week.
- Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:30.
- Includes a 30-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks each working day.
- Breaks are to be scheduled between jobs, ensuring minimal disruption to work responsibilities.
This role requires flexibility and the ability to manage time effectively while balancing fieldwork, office meetings, and travel commitments.
Qualifications and Experience:

Independent Worker: Confident in working independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong problem-solving abilities.

Technical Skills: Competent in the use of laptops/tablets for system configurations and reporting (training provided).

Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective client and team interactions.

IT Troubleshooting: Good all-around IT troubleshooting skills.

Networking Knowledge: Experience with router setup, VPN configurations, and subnetting.

Cabling Experience: Cat 5e/6 cabling termination experience.

Electrical Experience: 18th
Edition, wiring regs and Part P

NIEIC qualified: Desirable

Technical Proficiency: Competent using a Multimeter, as well as other electrical and IT equipment.

Smart Metering Experience: Previous experience with smart metering systems, RF networks, or similar field-based technologies is preferred.

Health and Safety Certification: A health and safety qualification is desirable.

Clear Driving Licence: A valid, clear UK driving licence.

DBS Clearance: Basic DBS clearance (Disclosure and Barring Service).

Work Eligibility: Must be eligible to work in the UK.

CSCS Card or equivalent: Must hold a valid CSCS card (or be able to obtain one).
