Job Description

NREL’s National Security Research Oversight Office (NSRO) enables and oversees the lab’s national security research portfolio. This position reports to the NSRO Director and provides support to administrative and operational aspects of the Office’s responsibilities. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality, strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize multiple demands, and excellent interpersonal skills.

The Business Support IV/Administrative Associate creates, maintains and/or distributes a range of correspondence, reports, documentation, and processes with minimum supervision and oversight. This position has frequent interaction with internal and external collaborators, business partners, and other colleagues. Duties involve the use of MS Office products (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), so the AA will need to maintain advanced proficiency in these tools as well as multiple online systems for finance, purchasing, travel, personnel management, to name a few. The successful candidate will enjoy continuous learning, thrive in a dynamic environment, and be comfortable with ambiguity.

Typical tasks Include:

  • Serving as a resource to the NSRO Director and staff on institutional processes, procedures, and requirements, and provide input and recommendations on organization-specific administrative practices
  • Interfacing effectively with the NSRO team, the many Centers and Offices throughout NREL, senior NREL leadership, Department of Energy colleagues, and staff of other government and non-government organizations
  • Attending and drafting notes at weekly Office meetings
  • Proactively managing and/or monitoring multiple tasks and sources of information
  • Drafting correspondence for response to internal and external inquiries
  • Maintaining calendar(s) and scheduling meetings
  • Preparing and maintaining electronic files as needed
  • Coordinating the use of space in multiple venues
  • Following all Environment, Safety, Health and Quality policies and procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment
  • Following all NREL policies and procedures to ensure compliance with DOE orders and NREL requirements
  • Fulfilling additional duties as necessary.

Note: This position requires a Hybrid work arrangement, including regular in-person work at NREL's South Table Mountain Campus in Golden, CO, and is not eligible for 100% remote work arrangements.

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Extensive knowledge in specialized focused business support functions. A comprehensive understanding of both general and specific aspects of business support activities, and their practical application to a wide variety of problems and situations specific to the discipline or field supported. Advanced skills in applicable software packages and office equipment. Considerable project administration and business services skills. Broad knowledge of specific principles, procedures and practices related to supported fields and disciplines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, team and interpersonal skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Four to six years of experience in a fast-paced business environment with advanced experience in a senior administrative/support role
  • Considerable knowledge of specialized focused business support functions
  • Demonstrated leadership in team, task, and project administration skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize duties, multitask and complete assignments with strict deadlines and deliver high-quality work
  • Rigorous protection of confidential information
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, team collaboration and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance
  • High standards of work quality and professional conduct
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid U.S. security clearance. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE O 472.2A for additional information.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Q/SCI or TS/SCI clearance
  • Experience working in classified environments.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Business Support IV / Annual Salary Range: $56,800 - $93,700

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
