Description

Program Description: Goddard Riverside Community Center (GRCC) is a leading Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of $30 million. Star Learning Center, a program of GRCC, provides year-round tutoring and educational advocacy to underserved students from across the city. Each tutor is matched one-to-one with a student in grades 2-12. Tutors, students, and their families work closely with Star staff to meet student needs. Star staff also connect students with other GRCC programs and outside resources to enable them to reach their full potential.

 

Position Summary: Star Learning Center is seeking a dynamic, detail-oriented and committed individual to implement and oversee all aspects of its tutor recruitment and engagement work. The individual will also be responsible for understanding student academic and social-emotional needs to ensure the quality of student-tutor matches. The candidate will work closely with other Goddard youth programs, Development and a range of community partners to strengthen all aspects of the Star program. A successful Coordinator will need to possess exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills, and to thrive within a close-knit and diverse community of volunteer tutors, students, parents and staff. 

 

Schedule: Monday through Friday (Mon 11am-7pm, Tue & Wed 10:30am-6:30pm, Thurs & Fri 10am-6pm)

 

Salary Range: $50,251.98 to $54,886.87

 

Candidates must have the required qualifications to be considered for the position. The salary offer will be based on the candidate’s number of years experience in the exact or comparable position and additional preferred qualifications will be taken into account. 

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

Role, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Develop and implement a recruiting strategy to secure 250 to 300 volunteer tutors annually
  • Screen all tutor applications to School Year and Summer Programs; set up and conduct interviews of prospective tutors
  • Meet new students and review all student testing, reports and other information
  • Working closely with the Director, match all returning and new students with appropriate tutors and set up tutor orientations
  • Build relationships with students and tutors to monitor progress and satisfaction
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with colleges and graduate schools to secure tutors with advanced content mastery; screen and oversee Barnard’s America Reads/America Counts paid tutors
  • Provide outreach to current and former tutors to encourage ongoing involvement with the program
  • Plan Regents and Extended tutoring programs and secure additional tutors as needed
  • Coordinate with Options Access and Success Team managers to connect Options students with tutoring
  • Support Program fundraising by working with Development and the Director on grant applications and reports; engage current and former tutors and program alumni
  • Provide tutor recommendations and reference requests including college and graduate school rec letters and community service tracking

 

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s or other Advanced Degree preferred
  • Minimum of three years' experience working with children and teens in a school, after-school or other youth program setting

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish
  • Prior experience recruiting and supervising volunteers
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including ability to collaborate with diverse populations including Star students and families, volunteers, and partners
  • Effective interviewer
  • Ability to travel as needed for recruiting activities

 

Computer Skills Needed

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift boxes

 

Work Environment

  • Office and tutoring center/ work from home hybrid model (through June 2025)
