Job description

Figma is growing our team of passionate people on a mission to make design accessible to all. Born on the Web, Figma helps entire product teams brainstorm, design and build better products — from start to finish. Whether it’s consolidating tools, simplifying workflows, or collaborating across teams and time zones, Figma makes the design process faster, more efficient, and fun while keeping everyone on the same page. From great products to long-lasting companies, we believe that nothing great is made alone—come make with us!

Mobile Platform builds and maintains the foundational systems that power mobile at Figma. Figma’s mobile offerings are some of the most complex interplay between web/native/C++ in the industry. As a result our team works across the entire stack, with experts and generalists that are able to operate within Swift, Kotlin, C++, JS, Python/Ruby.

Our mission is to build infrastructure that boost quality and product velocity for our partner teams, in order to accelerate mobile’s impact within Figma. We do this by building highly reliable systems that products are often built on, create monitoring systems for guard quality, and directly operate on some of the most sensitive aspects of our user experience. Our success hinges on close collaboration with many partner teams, and requires individuals who are able to collaborate with a wide-range of cross-functional experts. With our partners, we maximize the effectiveness of our mobile products, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality and functionality.

The team is currently tackling one of the most fundamental problems with Figma’s core systems: they are too resource-heavy to operate within mobile, and we’ll need to come up with a solution that enables Figma to operate in a low-resource environment.

Mobile Platform is looking for engineers with domain expertise in iOS, as well as both high- and low-level performance optimization. We’re looking for someone who is excited to define what foundational mobile technology can mean at Figma, by leveraging Figma’s deep expertise within C++/WASM/JS. Much of Figma’s systems are built in a cross-platform manner, leveraging Switf/Kotlin/C++/JS. As such, we’re looking for engineers who are excited to work across the stack.

Figma is a highly collaborative organization and most projects are owned by small teams of 2-3 people. You’ll form strong relationships with product managers, other mobile platform engineers, and can expect to partner regularly with engineers and leaders beyond your immediate team. We strive to foster an inclusive culture that promotes equity and belonging, and use the following values to guide how we work together: communicate early and often, lift your team, focus on craftsmanship, and prioritize impact. You can learn more about our engineering values and how we developed them here.

What you'll do at Figma:

  • Work closely with leadership to help shape the vision for mobile foundational systems, leveraging the extensive expertise Figma has within C++/Web, while adapting it for the world of mobile.
  • Work closely with teammates and partners in Engineering, Product, Design, Marketing, User Research, and Data Science to build new features and achieve roadmap goals. We prioritize collaboration and cross-functional partnerships, so you won’t operate in silos.
  • Drive guidance, quality, and standards for mobile at Figma, and explore opportunities that keep us on the cutting edge of mobile/system-level design.
  • Be a mentor and provide thoughtful feedback to your peers, and benefit from strong personal and professional mentorship opportunities yourself.
  • Contribute to org-wide initiatives like new hire onboarding, interview process development, and Belonging/Equity/Inclusion efforts.
  • Continue ramping and learning. The technical challenges you'll tackle on the Mobile Platform are unique, fun, ambitious, and ever-evolving.
  • Some efforts you might impact include:
    • Re-architecting Figma’s mobile offering “Mirror”, to be resilient to crashes, and being able to operate in a resource constrained environment.
    • Building a new rendering system to enable some of the most complex Figma design files to be viewable in Mobile.
    • Streamline the communication layer between Web and Native to be performant and reliable.
    • Develop the next generation of secure mobile authentication for Figma.
    • Unlock Figma’s core systems within WASM/JS/backend to mobile product teams, to build unique product experiences.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • 3+ years of iOS experience.
  • Demonstrate an interest or ability to work across the stack.
  • Proactive communication skills and a desire to work in a collaborative environment.
  • An interest in mentorship, learning from others, and digging into new challenges.
  • An inclusive approach towards building features, solving problems, investing in culture, and growing teams.

While it’s not required, it’s an added plus if you also have:

  • Experience working in low-level system design, streaming services, and full-stack systems.
  • Web/C++ experience
  • Rendering via OpenGL
  • Building and designing streaming services.
At Figma, one of our values is Grow as you go. We believe in hiring smart, curious people who are excited to learn and develop their skills. If you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with the points outlined in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
