Job description

Marie Curie is the UK’s leading end-of-life charity. We are the largest non-NHS provider of end-of-life care in the UK, the only provider across all 4 nations, delivering community nursing and hospice care across the country, while providing information and support on all aspects of dying, death, and bereavement. Our leading research pushes the boundaries of what we know about good end-of-life, and our campaigns fight for a world where everyone gets to have the best possible quality of life while living with an illness, they’re likely to die from.


This key role will be pivotal in leading Marie Curie’s central research governance processes for research carried out in Marie Curie services and working with places across the UK to support capacity and capability assessments led by local governance committees. This will include contract management where necessary, based on the principle that governance overview is proportionate to risk, and will involve cross-directorate working with our legal and data and information governance teams.


The postholder will also work with relevant other organisations to endeavour to support services more widely to become and stay research active and contribute to building the evidence base for palliative and end of life care.



You will be responsible for:


  • Leading on any aspects of research governance for research carried out at Marie Curie and to be responsible for embedding and refining the relevant policies and processes.
  • Ensuring that all research carried out within Marie Curie is done in accordance with the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research, following the recently approved Marie Curie Research Governance Policy.
  • Working closely with the research leads and fellows / medical directors / service leads within Marie Curie hospices and community services to provide specialist advice in relation to research governance.
  • Providing proactive research governance support to researchers and clinicians at all stages of the research process, in hospices with or without research lead / fellow and other services.
  • Maintaining an up-to-date central research register for all research projects carried out within Marie Curie services.
  • Working in partnership with other interested organisations to support the development of a community of practice for research at hospices and other people services.


Key Criteria:


  • Significant experience in undertaking clinical research governance.
  • In depth practical working knowledge of the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research gained through training and significant experience in governance posts.
  • Substantial experience of devising, introducing, implementing, developing and reviewing research governance compliance practice across a complex organisation.
  • Extensive experience of leading and delivering projects and implementing outputs across an organisation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Extensive data analysis and interpretation skills with high level of attention to detail
  • Prioritisation skills and demonstrable capacity to prioritise problems and develop actions to address these and work to deadlines.

Salary: £43,250-48,048 per annum (pro rata, 0.5FTE)

Based: This role is predominantly home-based and can be based anywhere within the UK.
