Cloud Operations Developer

Location: Remote - Anywhere in Canada


Empire Life is looking to hire a Cloud Operations Developer to join our IT Infrastructure & Operations team!

What you’ll be working on

  • Re-platforming and operationalizing existing batch jobs onto cloud-native services (e.g., Kubernetes Jobs, serverless functions) with automated workflows.

  • Designing, building, and maintaining automated runbooks and self-healing capabilities for cloud-native applications and shared enterprise services.

  • Implementing and managing advanced monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions for cloud-native systems and modernized batch workloads, ensuring application observability integration.

  • Ensuring the continued stable operation of existing legacy batch jobs and applications during the transition period.

  • Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for operational components and shared services.

  • Managing the application layer for self-hosted streaming platforms like Redpanda/Kafka (e.g., configuring brokers, topics, security, monitoring) on provided infrastructure via IaC.

  • Automating the deployment and scaling of cloud SFTP services (e.g., Azure / GCP) if cloud-managed, or managing the SFTP application layer if self-hosted in the cloud.

  • Collaborating with other teams to manage enterprise-wide document management systems (e.g., Confluence, SharePoint, AODOCS) and enterprise network file shares/storage solutions.

  • Contributing to company-wide disaster recovery planning, focusing on cloud infrastructure DR plans and automation.

  • Providing Level 2/3 production support and incident management for cloud infrastructure and cloud-managed platforms, acting as incident champion for infra-related outages.

  • Shifting operational focus from reactive firefighting to proactive issue prevention and performance optimization.


What we’re looking for you to have
  • 5+ years work experience in application design, application development or quality assurance methodologies

  • Completion of a University degree or equivalent experience

  • Ability to think logically, analyze, and solve problems.

  • Ability to learn new technology, including infrastructure and configuration as code.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

  • Strong understanding of existing batch processes and their modernization to cloud-native services.

  • Proficiency in cloud fundamentals and Kubernetes concepts.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for operational components.

  • Strong scripting skills (e.g., Python, Go, Terraform, Ansible).

  • Experience with cloud-native monitoring, alerting, and workflow orchestration tools.

  • Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles for operational excellence.

  • Experience with self-hosted streaming platforms (e.g., Redpanda/Kafka) deployment and management is a plus.

  • Experience with managing SFTP services (cloud-managed or self-hosted).

  • Familiarity with enterprise document management systems and shared file storage solutions.
