ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Bookkeeper at 5 ELK, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day bookkeeping tasks for a diverse portfolio of UK-based clients. This role requires a strong understanding of UK accounting standards, VAT regulations, and proficiency in widely used UK accounting software such as Xero or QuickBooks.

You will play a key role in maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records, preparing and submitting VAT returns on time, and delivering reliable support to both clients and internal teams. Your attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, and client-focused mindset will be essential to your success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily bookkeeping activities for multiple UK-based clients across various financial sectors.
  • Prepare, review, and submit VAT returns in compliance with HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements.
  • Reconcile control accounts, manage intercompany transactions, and perform necessary journal entries and adjustments.
  • Act as the primary liaison for UK clients, handling queries, providing updates, and managing escalations professionally. •
  • Maintain up-to-date accounting records using platforms such as Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage, and other UK-based accounting tools.
  • Prepare basic management reports, trial balances, and other ad hoc financial data as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration and other related fields
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with UK-based clients or within UK accounting practices.
  • Hands-on experience with UK accounting software including Bright Manager, Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage, DEXT, and Hudock.
  • Strong understanding of UK VAT rules, Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), and payroll processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in English, with the ability to effectively communicate with UK-based clients.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple client accounts simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working independently and collaborating with remote teams in a fast-paced environment.

Skills

  • AAT, ACCA part-qualified, or equivalent bookkeeping/accounting certification.
  • Prior experience in a UK-based outsourced accounting firm or BPO environment.
  • Familiarity with UK financial reporting standards and deadlines.
