Bird City Texas Intern

Position Summary:

Audubon Texas along with Texas Parks and Wildlife oversee the Bird City Texas program – a community-focused certification program created to help people protect birds and their habitats where we live, work, and recreate.  Across Texas, 15 cities have been certified, and we are hoping more communities follow suit.

The Bird City Texas intern is a paid summer internship program working to amplify the Bird City Texas program. The internship is designed to provide a range of administrative and programmatic experiences focusing on urban conservation for birds. The program consists of community outreach, program improvement through online portal, resource and educational material creation.

This role in hybrid, virtual and in-person when possible and based in Central Texas for those interested in environmental education, conservation science, community engagement, and conservation minded marketing and branding.

Length of Internship:  8-10 weeks

Location: Remote; opportunities for hybrid work in Texas

Compensation:

$19.00 / hour

Intern Responsibilities and Learning Objectives / Essential Functions:

• Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

• Learn about urban conservation needs for Bird Cities by building relationships and soliciting feedback from partners to transform into Bird City Texas resources including but not limited to brochures, handouts, PowerPoints, social media posts, blogs, etc.

• Create a community space for sharing through the development newsletter templates or other community connection resources for Bird City’s to share, learn, and connect with one another

• Assist with administrative needs of the Bird City Program to help make sure it is functioning effectively and meeting the needs of our current and interested cities

• When possible, visit Bird City’s in person to build relationships with local community lead, collect photos, and story highlights to be shared as well as recommendations for how they can better be supported – to be complied into capstone report

• Support the planning efforts of a Bird City Gathering to bring together 15 cities and potential new cities for a 1-2 day workshop hosted in a Bird City

• Learn about the critical actions communities take to become a Bird City by participating in the application review process of new Bird Cities

• Gain experience in marketing and branding as well as assist with the elevation of a statewide program with the creation of Bird City materials to be used in perpetuity

• Develop leadership skills by leading the community outreach and informational gathering efforts of Bird Cities through constructive conversations.

Intern Schedule:  Monday – Friday, working hours between 8am-5pm, flexible schedule and times available

Projected Start Date/End Date: Mid June – Mid August

Qualifications and Experience:

• Comfort navigating design platforms as well as other informational tools such as Canva, Mailchimp, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.

• Ability to adjust, take direction, think critically, and receive and provide constructive feedback
