Primary Job Function

In order to help Texas Bay Credit Union (TBCU) stand out as a leading financial institution the Loan Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating simple secured and unsecured consumer loan applications based on their judgment approve, modify, or deny consistent with TBCU Guidelines. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

•    Review, analyze, and evaluate loan applications based on established Credit Union policies and apply knowledge of underwriting procedures and loan authority to approve, counter, or deny consumer loan applications by:

o    Evaluating and ensuring that the transactions are accurate, complete, and compliant.

o    Review required documentation for accuracy and truthfulness.

o    Apply fraud detection and prevention techniques.

o    Perform paystub and basic tax return analysis to determine ability to repay.

•    Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance including, Bank Secrecy, Anti-Money Laundering, Fair Lending, and Truth in Lending Laws appropriate to the position.

•    Maintain a thorough understanding of TBCU’s underwriting standards, risk philosophy, and credit culture.

•    Responsible for receiving and initiating phone inquiries and emails with the loan originator to provide information or reasoning regarding loan decisions.

•    Review credit reports and interpret data along with analyzing key lending ratios to determine capacity, credit utilization, and loan-to-value.

•    Must clearly document and communicate reasoning for decisions.

•    Maintain and strengthen relationships with members, internal and external originators.

•    Address minor complaints or issues raised by internal staff.

•    Assist with training originators regarding lending policies, processes, procedures, and promotional campaigns.


Other Duties and Responsibilities

•    Play an active part in helping credit union teams function smoothly and efficiently. 

•    Stay alert to potential problems and propose changes to policies and programs. 

•    Back-up other coworkers as needed. 

•    Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

•    As an employee of an “Essential Business” (as defined by Texas’s Executive Order GA 14), employees are expected to continue to report to work as scheduled during state issued emergency declarations.

•    Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations. 


Required Knowledge

•    A high school education or GED. 

•    Three to five years of similar or related experience. 

•    Minimum of 6 months in a judgmental lending environment where a Loan Origination System is used as a guide to making decisions.


Required Abilities

•    Strong analytical and organizational skills, along with attention to detail.

•    Maintain knowledge of key trends in the financial services industry that impact loan quality and underwriting.

•    Ability to use logical reasoning when interpreting facts and make objective observations, evaluations, and recommendations.

•    Basic knowledge of credit analysis and reporting.

•    Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills

•    Must be self-motivated and a quick learner

•    Must be able to multi task and work well in a fast-paced environment

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The employee is regularly required to walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, kneel, talk, hear, and climb stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 10-15 pounds. This position requires viewing a computer monitor for extended lengths of time and travel to and from all credit union offices.
