Job Description
The Controls/Electrical Engineering Manager will be responsible for leading and managing the FORTNA LPS Engineering Team focusing on Distribution and Fulfillment systems as well as Amazon. The Engineering Manager will lead and mentor engineers in Controls/Electrical design, development, and system implementation of material handling projects. The Manager will work with Solutions & Estimating in qualifying proposals before client release & Project Management teams to properly schedule and track controls engineering efforts through the project lifespan. The Manager will support the Sr. Leadership team by providing technical information, guidance, and product knowledge while performing related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Manages a team of Controls/Electrical engineers, including recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation actions; enforcing policies and procedure
· Coordinate and balance workload using both internal and external resources to complete scheduled engineering activities as required.
· Monitor and coordinate actions with Problem Resolutions in engineering to ensure departmental awareness and corrective designs are implemented.
· Creative and out-of-the-box thinking when designing or programming a system to help meet schedule, budget, and customer expectations without any direction.
· Analyze, recommend, and/or develop new concepts, standards, and technology for higher quality and cost-effectiveness.
· Provide expert insight into Distribution and Fulfillment and Amazon systems with a focus on Machine and Warehouse Controls systems.
· Participate in collaborative cross-divisional discussions/workshops geared towards continuously improving standards, processes, and products (Software and Hardware) .
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent, with 10+ years of experience.
· Experience managing a team of at least 10-15 people.
· Understands the financial responsibilities when managing a team and ensures team members accurately complete time sheets, are staying within or under budget, providing process improvements, and balancing workloads.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with executives, engineers, salespeople, vendors, and peers
· Excellent management skills for directing, coaching, scheduling, and assisting team members
· Familiar with the standard-used controls programming concepts, practices, and procedures typically used in the material handling industry.
· Experience within an industrial controls environment which includes:
o PLC programming (Rockwell Software preferred, Siemens software a plus)
o Structured Text Programming
o HMI Programming (Ignition is preferred)
o Field Device Hardware design and implementation.
o Industrial communication networks (EtherNet/IP, Devicenet, Profinet, etc.)
o Database
o Low voltage electrical design and drawing creation.
· Experience using CAD software to create electrical drawings and schematics. (Autocad)
· Experience with networked VFDs, Servos, and other motor controllers and best practices in design & integration to overall systems controls.
· Experience with Microsoft 365 - Office Apps.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
· Must be self-motivated, self-aware, detail-oriented, and results-focused.
· Expert understanding in programmable logic controllers, Industrial PCs and industrial networks.
· Understanding of the function and design of highly integrated automated material handling systems.
· Ability to schedule, manage and execute complex system implementations, enhancements, and retrofits.
· Ability to collaborate and communicate with FORTNA team members, project managers and customers in a professional written and spoken manner.
· Ability to formulate direction Engineers and direct Jr. Level Controls Engineers to support the project and ensure all aspects of project goals are achieved.
· Ability to produce quality designs, drawings, programs, and documentation with minimal errors.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
When traveling the job environment shifts to a site-based, typically industrial. When traveling this role routinely uses appropriate PPE, electrical diagnostic tools, electrical implementation tools, laptops, and networking equipment.
TRAVEL: Generally, this position requires up to 30% travel to various sites.
