Job description

Executive Director (Development Services)

Work Location:

To advance the purpose of InterVarsity, the Executive Director, Development Services will lead the Development Services Teams providing resources, solutions, information, analysis, systems and tools that serve ministry partners, alumni, Field staff, and Development’s Annual and Strategic Giving Teams. The Executive Director will build alignment through clear procedures, processes, and policies within Development. The role will partner extensively with other EVP lines to grow InterVarsity’s philanthropic efforts.

MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES 

Spiritual Growth:  

  • Be a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world 

  • Be a lifelong learner who prizes the discipleship of the mind, particularly in the area of generosity, staying current on issues of fund development, business practices within ministry, and project leadership 

 

Leadership: 

  • Serve the entire movement with wisdom as “leader of the whole” on the National Leadership Team (NLT). Help grow development understanding among NLT members 

  • Serve as a member of the Development Leadership Team (DLT) and the Senior DLT (SDLT) 

  • Prioritize, coordinate, and implement Strategic Plan, annual plan and Development projects in support of the whole Development organization. 

  • Ensure the alignment of the Development Leadership Team with the EVP/CDO, creating agendas, defining objectives, and disseminating internal communications 

  • Manage effective cross functional teams, projects, and change processes that meaningfully contribute to InterVarsity’s values, purposes and grow organizational revenue 

  • Lead all members of the Development Services TeamEnsure annual goals are set and performance reviews are givenProvide feedback and coaching to enhance performance and develop leaders 

  • Resource and partner with the VP of Strategic Giving and VP of Annual Giving to ensure annual goals are accomplished 

  • Create, implement and improve processes across Development that will strengthen donor experience and increase operational efficiency, consistent with an integrated development strategy 

  • Work collaboratively with International Fellowship of Evangelical Students/USA, Inter-Varsity Canada, and IFES Oxford to service donors as needed 

  • Identify and address emerging risks and adapt to changing trends, environments, and circumstances 

  • Perform other duties assigned by the EVP/CDO 

 

Act as Chief of Staff for CDO: 

  • Lead Development Team’s annual budget process in partnership with the EVP/CDO to ensure budgets are prepared on time and meet stated objectives 

  • Represent the EVP, Development on special projects, tasks, and communications 

  • Monitor Development Team’s expenses and income on behalf of the EVP/CDO 

  • Lead long term and annual planning processes for Development as a whole 

  • Create annual reports for Development as a whole 

  • Provide internal Development education for other EVP lines as needed 

 

Development Operations:  

  • Optimize donation websites. Work with external vendors, InterVarsity’s Product Owner of IV donation websites, the Technology Team, Ministry Intelligence, Donor Services Team, and the DLT to ensure an excellent experience for donors and staff that drives increasing revenue 

  • Serve as the Development leader in strategic partnership and cross organizational planning with the Finance, Technology, Project Management, Human Resources, Field, President’s Office, and Communications teams  

  • Grow the Development Team’s use of project management, aligning Development’s project management processes to the organizational wide best practices 

  • Ensure all donors are receipted and/or acknowledged at least annually 

  • Ensure donations are credited to the right accounts accurately, according to donor intent 

  • Ensure InterVarsity’s donors are thanked in partnership with other Development Teams  

  • Increase donor pipeline through portfolio reviews and donor research 

  • Provide Salesforce data analysis, reports and dashboards and ongoing Salesforce adaptation 

  • Provide Salesforce training for Development teams as needed 

 

Technical Leadership: 

  • Represent and provide leadership for Development in software system evaluations, implementations and upgrades 

  • Sunsetting of Salesforce Non-Profit Starter Pack 

  • WeGive donate site implementation 

  • Other implementations as needed 

 

Supervision: 

  • Provide supervision, development, and pastoral care to the Development Services staff 

  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop qualified staff as necessary 

  • Ongoing succession planning for different Development Services Teams 

 

Collaboration: 

  • As a member of the NLT, identify and implement strategic opportunities to enhance how Development can support the ministry through strategic partnerships, excellent customer service and proactive value adding activities 

  • Build and strengthen bridges between Development and the wider organization 

  • Advocate and grow the Development Teams value and application of integrated development 

  • As an NSC senior leader, partner with other leaders to steward NSC culture and care for NSC staff 

 

Administration: 

  • Evaluate Development structures, goals, and performance measures for continual improvement 

  • Serve as Development point person on risk management, privacy issues, and legal issues 

  • Manage Development Services annual budgets and expenses  

  • Ensure InterVarsity’s development activities are compliant with IVCF policies, external laws, and ECFA guidelines 

  • Own, maintain and ensure adherence to Gift Acceptance Policy by leading Gift Acceptance Committee  

  • Ensure adherence to campaign counting commitments 

 

Ministry Partnership Development: 

  • Develop a support team for prayer and financial support through visits, phone calls, and regular prayer letters 

  • Raise an agreed-upon amount of financial support 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Annually affirm InterVarsity’s Statement of Agreement 

  • Bachelors degree required, 10 years of Senior Leadership experience is required  

  • Experience with InterVarsity as a student or a staff member preferred 

  • Working knowledge of software applications or willingness to learn (Salesforce, Microsoft Suite of Products, Wrike etc. 

  • Demonstrated effective managerial and administrative leadership of operations 

  • Demonstrated innovative approach to problem resolution 

  • Strong oral and written communications skills 

  • Ability to function independently and lead multiple, simultaneous projects 

  • Ability to articulate ideas and to think critically about revenue and analytics    

  • Strong organization and time management skills 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and lead cross-functional project teams 

  • Ability to work well as part of a diverse team 

  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently 

  • Ability to travel as needed and negotiated 

Pay Range: $97,320.00 - $129,756.00 per year
