POSITION SUMMARY:
The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) is hiring Regional Organizers to help attract new membership, strengthen existing state organizing capacity, and develop effective community engagement programs for an inclusive, representative democracy. The Activation and Justice Department is a new department intended to strengthen three levers of work within a unified system offering direct support and guidance to all 51 state Leagues. The values statement of this department is grounded in the belief that our American democracy is just, inclusive, and accountable. This belief is executed through grassroots organizing, strategic advocacy, and legal action to empower communities to defend fundamental rights and ensure a government that truly represents the people.
Regional Organizers are key to building and growing the grassroots network for the fight to protect democracy. Through tactical engagement, Regional Organizers execute strategies developed by the Senior Director, Mobilization and Engagement. Regional Organizers are required to live in one of the states for their region of responsibility. The salary for these positions is $75,000 annually.
This posting is for a Regional Organizer for Region #3.
Region #3 consists of the following States: Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Missouri.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Develop and execute state-specific tactical plans for voter engagement.
· Adapt tactical plans as needed to function under authoritarian government conditions.
· Identify, build, and maintain relationships with local partners, grassroots organizations, and community leaders.
· Recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers in partnership with state and local Leagues for voter registration, education, and turnout efforts.
· Implement digital and in-person organizing tactics, including phone/text banking and canvassing.
· Track data on outreach efforts and adjust tactics accordingly.
· Monitor and elevate awareness of state-level threats to voting rights and advocacy efforts.
· Represent the organization at local events, coalitions, and public forums.
· Carry out regional workshops and engagement plans.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or comparable work experience of 5 years or more, required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
· Must have 3-5 years of grassroots organizing, campaign, or advocacy experience.
· Experience mobilizing volunteers and working within diverse communities.
· Knowledge of state-specific voting laws and electoral processes.
· Strong communication, public speaking, and diplomacy skills.
· Possess a positive and collaborative attitude.
· Ability to work independently and demonstratable ability to manage multiple priorities successfully.
· Must have the ability to travel 10%-20% of the time.
· Bi-lingual and/or ASL certified a plus.
· Knowledge of how to organize in authoritarian government environments a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/TRAVEL:
The person in this position requires a mixture of physical, mental and logical stamina due to the field-based nature of this role. A successful regional organizer will travel within the assigned region by car, public transportation, train, or flights. This role also should expect to carry materials such as pamphlets, signs, laptops for events and meetings. Standing or walking for extended periods, working long or irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, and adapting to various environments (indoor offices, outdoor rallies, grassroots meetings). Setting up or breaking down event spaces.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment requires an individual comfortable with interpersonal interactions and competent in technology use. This role requires engaging in face-to-face interactions with League members and volunteers, as well as community members and partners. The successful candidate will navigate a variety of social spaces, including crowded or high-energy environments like town halls, regional and state training, marches, or conferences. This role requires a laptop, tablet, or phone for digital organizing (provided by employer) and includes activities such as typing or data entry for tracking metrics, reporting and communication, and presenting materials in meetings, sometimes requiring additional technology such as projectors or larger displays.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee should expect to spend up to 50% indoors and outdoors equally but will sometimes be outdoors more for events and may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be elevated during events.
