Job description

Established in 2021, Independence Pet Holdings is a corporate holding company that manages a diverse and broad portfolio of modern pet health brands and services, including insurance, pet education, lost recovery services, and more throughout North America.

We believe pet insurance is more than a financial product and build solutions to simplify the pet parenting journey and help improve the well-being of pets. As a leading authority in the pet category, we operate with a full stack of resources, capital, and services to support pet parents. Our multi-brand and omni-channel approach include our own insurance carrier, insurance brands and partner brands.

From adoption and lost pet services to insurance and wellness, we’re uniting the pet care ecosystem through modern technology, data, and design.

Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to lead a team of engineers building scalable, high-quality software solutions across our digital platform. This role requires a hands-on leader who can balance team management with deep technical oversight—driving delivery, ensuring architectural integrity, and fostering engineering excellence.

You’ll work closely with product, design, and data teams to turn business objectives into executable technical roadmaps. You should be comfortable leading within a scaled Agile framework, mentoring developers, and influencing architectural decisions.

A startup-minded approach is essential—we value action, autonomy, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Team & Delivery Leadership

Architecture & Engineering Standards

  • Guide system design and technical architecture decisions in partnership with tech leads and architects
  • Ensure code quality, performance, and security standards are consistently met
  • Promote best practices in CI/CD, testing, and documentation

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with Product and UX leaders to scope, estimate, and plan development cycles
  • Translate complex business requirements into scalable, maintainable engineering solutions
  • Communicate effectively with leadership and cross-functional teams

Talent Development & Culture

  • Recruit, onboard, and grow top engineering talent
  • Foster a high-trust, inclusive, and collaborative team culture
  • Provide regular coaching and career development guidance to engineers

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years in software engineering, with 2+ years in a formal leadership role

  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: TypeScript/React, Java/Spring Boot, .NET Core, Python, or similar
  • Familiarity with containerization, API development, event-driven systems, and DevOps pipelines
  • Ability to set engineering direction while rolling up your sleeves when needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in consumer-facing digital platforms, ideally e-commerce or insurance
  • Strong experience with leading in a scaled Agile (e.g., SAFe) environment and distributed engineering teams
  • Experience with observability and performance monitoring tools
  • Background in working with offshore teams or managed service partners
