As an Environmental Health Specialist in the Stormwater program, you play a vital role in educating the community about stormwater pollution prevention. In this role, you will conduct field inspections for compliance with stormwater regulations, identify and document illicit discharges and pollution risk, and conduct public outreach to stakeholders, adults, and children in the community. We Require
Bachelor's degree in environmental health, microbiology, entomology, chemistry, food science, or a related field with 30 semester hours of natural, physical, or applied science coursework
Please note: An official academic transcript must be submitted as part of the application, or applicants may submit proof of Registered Sanitarian (RS) status instead of a transcript.
AND
Licensed as a Registered Sanitarian by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), OR by an equivalent licensing authority of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona Registration within six months of employment. (Employees will receive a provisional salary set below the minimum rate for the position until the required certification is obtained.)
OR
Receive Registered Sanitarian Certification within one year of hire date (please review the criteria to qualify for the Registered Sanitarian examination at https://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/food-safety-environmental-services/sanitarians-council/index.php#registration-criteria)

An Arizona driver's license is required to start working. Out-of-state applicants are welcome to apply but must obtain an Arizona driver's license at the time of hire.

Job Contributions
Performs routine, unscheduled, inspections of industrial and commercial facilities for compliance, conducts wet and dry weather monitoring at outfalls; Inspects the unincorporated urbanized areas of the county, inspects stormwater features at all county facilities, inspects all post-construction projects, takes samples as needed, evaluates and documents inspection data to determine compliance, permit fees, violations, and citations
Performs stormwater outreach program activities, including K-8 classroom presentations, attends public outreach events, assists in the poster contest & creation of poster contest calendar, and assists with the development of informational material
Investigates and responds to citizen complaints, including illicit discharges to the storm drain system ensuring compliance with stormwater regulations
Working Conditions
Work will occur in an office and field environment; may be exposed to outdoor climate conditions and indoor commercial environments that are sometimes wet, unsanitary, and hot
Must be able to operate a vehicle, including light trucks, for travel to inspection sites, which may sometimes be in remote areas
Ability to bend, reach, twist, kneel, climb, and stoop
May be subject to working after hours, weekends, and holidays
Ability to lift floor to shoulder and shoulder to waist up to 30 pounds; carry, push, or pull up to 30 pounds for a distance of 50 feet
Protective clothing (i.e. hard hat, steel toes shoes) is necessary for some environments
