Since New Settlement’s inception in 1989 as a settlement house rooted in the Bronx, our organization has been a responsive community partner. Originally established to revitalize abandoned buildings into affordable housing, New Settlement has since evolved into a multi-generational, forward-looking organization. We support 15,000 members of the community annually by providing organizing in housing and schools, and programs in education, college access, youth development, arts, workforce development, wellness and more. PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The New Settlement Summer Rising Program services students in grades K through 8th. Programming hours are 8:00am until 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, July 2, 2025 - August 15, 2025 Group Leaders are required to attend mandatory Professional Development Training on June 16 – 18 & June 20, 2025. There will be academic instruction led by DOE teachers from 8am-12pm, Monday through Thursday. Group Leaders will assist DOE teachers and assist Activity Specialist from 12pm-4pm, Mon.-Thursday.

The program provides stimulating hands-on art, literacy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) activities and Physical Fitness.

We use an age-appropriate, positive youth-development approach that includes health, fitness and community engagement.

We have partnerships with Children’s Museum of Manhattan, NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, New York Cares, CookShop, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Bronx Care Health System, and ABADA Capoeira.

JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Program Director, the Group Leader will provide support to participants ages 5-14 from the beginning of the program throughout their entire enrollment. The Group Leader teaches, nurtures and encourages a group of about 20-30 students in the program school by being a positive role model.

Job Duties Include But Not Limited To

  • Understands, adheres, and enforces school program expectations, policies, and protocols as laid out by Program Director and Division Director.
  • Sets a positive tone with students.
  • Assists the Activity Specialist with providing quality hands-on activities.
  • Ensures the safety of students at all times.
  • Anticipates and resolves conflict.
  • Reports all incidents accurately and timely.
  • Supervises mealtime.
  • Collaborates with New Settlement colleagues and teachers.
  • Interacts positively with parents.
  • Required to participate in staff meetings and training.
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned by the Program Director.
