Description: Diagnostic assessors will conduct a fine-grained analysis of a written assignments from both first- and second-year design courses and create a linguistic profile for the student that identifies potential areas for improvement in engineering communication. Assessors will then tutor and support students individually in their development of professional language and engineering communication.

Estimated enrolment: approx. 600 students
Schedule: Assessment will take place primarily between September-November 2025 and between January and March 2026. Duties pertaining to tutoring and support may be assigned during the remainder of the academic year through April 2026.
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026
Hours: 15 hours: This includes 10 hours of diagnostic assessment (online) and benchmarking and approximately 5 hours of tutoring and support (online and/or in person). Workload dependent. Additional hours may be negotiated during the remainder of the academic year on a discretionary basis.
Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates are: Writing Instructor 1 - $55.46/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 1 Long Term - $59.62/hr plus 4% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 - $59.62/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 Long Term - $61.05/hr plus 6% vacation pay; Writing Instructor 2 (priority) - $61.38/hr plus 6% vacation pay and Writing Instructor 2 (priority) Long Term- $62.82/hr plus 6% vacation pay. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Applied Linguistics, Communication, Writing Studies, English, Engineering, Education, Rhetoric and Composition) with strong writing and oral communication skills. Flexible availability is a requirement for these positions.
Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in Education, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition or appropriate discipline as mentioned above, familiarity with post-secondary multilingual education practices and/or experience as a diagnostic assessor of engineering communication. a TESL certification is required for this position and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and working with multilingual students
Description of duties:

Meet with Professional Language Development (PLD)Coordinator and team of assessors for benchmarking sessions

Record and report assessment results in a timely manner

Provide individual and group support to students with a demonstrated PLD need

Document and report support to PLD Coordinator.
