The City of Racine is a Smart City. There are many opportunities for student involvement to research and analyze data. This is very impactful work because the purpose of a Smart City is to improve the lives of a city’s citizens and increase economic development through appropriate use of technology.

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, this position researches, gathers, and documents information on what Smart City Initiatives have already been completed, are in process, and might be done in the future. The position will also research companies, organizations, grants, etc. and other data that can assist in Bridging the Digital Divide. All of this will be used to tell the story of what the City of Racine has accomplished, is working on, and could plan to undertake.

Job Description

In this position you will find, collect, organize, map, and present a lot of information regarding Smart Cities and reducing the Digital Divide. This position will help gather all the data used by the Chief Information Officer and the rest of the Smart City team.

Essential Duties

  • Research Smart City projects, companies, government grants, etc.
  • Create reference documents in easy-to-use format for all Smart City research, historic documents, etc.
  • Take notes and participate in discussions during meetings.
  • Support city CIO in attending meetings, discussing topics, and researching new information.
  • Research anything you don’t know how to do, have the ability to be self taught in a variety of skills, and ask poignant questions when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned around research.

  • Sitting at a desk in an air-conditioned/heated office or working from home.

Educational Requirements

  • Currently attending a two or four-year college/university.
  • At least one 2nd year course in any subject requiring a large amount of research.
  • You might be able to receive college credit for this internship. Please confirm with your school.

  • Sitting and typing at a terminal while viewing a computer screen.

  • Telephones, computer with associated peripherals, and software.

Expected Work Schedule

The schedule will be determined after hiring. Applicant must be available to meet with the City of Racine employees during the day from Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Position offers the ability to work remotely except for meetings, community outreach, and events. Prefer an intern that can work at least 15-20 hours a week. This work will continue until the end of 2025.
