Description

JOB SUMMARY

Columbia College is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for a temporary, live-in position as an Assistant Area Coordinator for Residential Learning. This role is focused on enhancing residential learning experiences with a particular emphasis on understanding political science, election year information, and voter registration. The ideal candidate will have a passion for civic engagement, political science, and fostering educational environments within a college setting.

The Assistant Area Coordinator (AAC) is a staff member within the Division of Residence Life, within the area of Student Affairs. The AAC is responsible for an assigned residence hall but is expected to assist with additional areas of campus engagement and student development, as needed. The AAC is a professional staff member who reports directly to the Associate Dean of Students for Student Development. General responsibilities include student learning development, community development, administrative tasks, advising RA staff, carrying out the mission of the Residence Life program, and serving on the On Call Duty Schedule.
 

Qualifications


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Student Development

  • Assist the Area Coordinators in advising individual residents on personal, academic, and social matters.
  • Provide support and assistance to individual residents during personal crises relating to their general welfare. Utilize college and community resources in referring residents to appropriate offices and programs to enhance their personal growth.
  • Coordinate educational bulletin boards for the residence hall building in which they reside. 

Community Development

  • Build a sense of identity and belonging in the building by holding regular hall and/or building meetings, visiting residents, and keeping residents informed of campus news and resources.
  • Be visible and accessible to residents of the building during the week and weekends.
  • Involve residents in activities on the hall and in the greater residential community.
  • Maintain bulletin boards and door decorations.
  • Work cooperatively with RA/As, RHA and Area Coordinators.
  • Confront incidents and policy violations in all residence halls and complete incident reports for supervisor.
  • Advise and attend scheduled meetings and activities of the Residence Hall Association. Assist with annual events such as House Calls, Boo-rific, the Spring Kick Ball Tournament, etc.
  • Under the direction of the Area Coordinators, provide diverse and appropriate activities based on the Residence Life programming model and the 4 Cs of Leadership. Emphasis should be placed on out of the classroom learning.
  • Coordinate one weekend activity each semester with RA/As in your building.
  • Notify the Area Coordinators, Director of Residence Life and Housing, and Associate Dean of Students for Student Development of all matters affecting student life, particularly unresolved problems or situations affecting the welfare of students. Communicate the needs, interests, and concerns of residents to the Area Coordinator.

Student Learning Initiatives

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to create and facilitate workshops, discussion groups, and events related to political science, elections, and voter participation.
  • Serve as a resource for students seeking information on political science topics, election processes, and current events.
  • Stay informed about national and local political developments and provide timely updates and analyses to students.
  • Promote and support voter registration efforts among students.
  • Offer guidance on absentee voting, polling locations, and election-related questions.

Administrative

  • Attend weekly staff meetings with the Residence Life & Housing staff.
  • Attend on-going, in-service training sessions (typically once a semester).
  • Attend scheduled one-on-one meetings with Area Coordinator.
  • Submit work orders for your Hall.
  • Provide timely and accurate documentation concerning confrontations and policy violations.
  • Perform administrative duties as deemed necessary (e.g., room inventories, distribution of memos, incident reports, check out/in procedures).
  • Serve on the On Call duty rotation schedule.
  • Communicate effectively with personnel from other departments.
  • Remain accessible in the building during on-call nights except when doing rounds or handling emergencies.
  • Assume other responsibilities as specified by the Area Coordinator, Director of Residence Life and Housing, and Associate Dean of Students for Student Development.

Compensation

  • A private one-bedroom apartment within assigned hall.
  • Five (5)-meal plan (staff members who request a plan over five (5) must pay the difference).
  • $18,000 salary for one (1) academic year, paid monthly.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, education, sociology or closely related field.
  • Required to live in the residence halls for at least two semesters and demonstrate leadership abilities.
  • Must be a returning student or recent graduate familiar with Columbia College Residence Life and Housing.  
  • This temporary position is to offer support during an election year.
  • This is a live-in position requiring residency in a designated on-campus housing unit; evening and weekend hours may be necessary for program facilitation and student support.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.
