Compensation includes a base salary of $65,500.00 - $98,300.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. We are looking for an interdisciplinary digital Graphic Designer who has proven experience handling a wide range of visual, editorial coverage and infographic experience.
You will have the opportunity to work alongside some of the most accomplished journalists and video producers and photographers in the South to help us establish a bold visual identity and storytelling style that helps define The AJC for the next generation. And, you’ll have a chance to live, work and play in one of the nation’s most dynamic, fastest-growing cities, home to the nation’s largest film and television production hub outside of Hollywood.
A successful candidate displays strong editorial judgment, storytelling skills and design capabilities. Candidates with a background in graphic design, motion design, editorial illustration will be considered. We are redefining our visual strategy, and this role is a key to our success.
Some of your job responsibilities:
Work with a team of producers, photographers and journalists to amplify stories and improve workflow efficiency between teams.
Contribute to the conceptualization and design for animation and motion design in daily videos and long form series.
Create and edit charts, maps, and create lead visuals for news stories and features.
Think creatively about home page visuals and quickly react to breaking news stories with quick turnarounds.
Find thoughtful ways to elevate data visualization and infographics.
Able to think creatively about how we use illustrative graphics in the service of the story.
Maintain internal databases and workflow systems to track and archive assets.
Ensure that branding, fonts, logos are consistent between all verticals and teams.
Assist the social team with creating assets and templates.
Find creative solutions to elevate visuals across platforms and pull photo selections for digital and print platforms.
The qualifications and experience you should have:
With a BA/BS, must have 4/5+ years of design experience, motion design, and editing experience; with a Master’s degree have at least 2 years of experience; with Ph.D. must have at least 1 year of experience; with no degree, must have a minimum of 8 years of experience in digital video production.
2+ years experience in visual design
Experience analyzing and visualizing data and proven newsroom experience strongly preferred
Experience creating editorial illustrations in a variety of styles
Strong journalistic ethics and an understanding of the digital news landscape
Strong organizational skills and communication skills
Passion and excitement for news and digital content
Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines while juggling multiple projects
Ability to remain flexible in changing environments
Must be able to work an extended schedule as deadlines or the news cycle requires
Proficiency in Adobe suite, Canva, Figma; Photoshop, Illustrator is a must.
Proficiency in motion design using After Effects, Blender is a plus.
Familiarity with modern mapping tools (ARC, QGIS, Mapbox, DataWrapper, etc.)
