What We Offer

This is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. Although not guaranteed, we anticipate these positions will continue through the end of year.

This position will work ~20 hours per week and no more than 39 hours per week. The target pay range for this position $24.71 and $30.89. This position is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits. On‐call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.

Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. In this position you can expect to work remotely. Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days. Please note hybrid/remote work policies are subject to change.

Eligibility Specialists are considered subject matter experts in eligibility and public assistance programming, and we are seeking an individual who is familiar with these laws, rules, regulations, computer systems and general practices.

This position is an on-call eligibility specialist who will be working remotely, serving various eligibility Denver clients. This position will conduct interviews to determine initial and on-going financial eligibility for public assistance programs for Denver County, enter client information into a complex computer system, analyze information against numerous public assistance programs and their related regulations, and refer clients to a variety of internal and external resources/services.

Specifically as a  Eligibility Specialist you will

  • Facilitate interviews with applicants and conducts application review in order to determine applicant eligibility for public assistance programs including but not limited to cash assistance, food assistance, and Medicaid.

  •  Resolve complex case issues and effectively represent Denver Human Services within the community providing essential services .

  • Elicit and verify pertinent eligibility information such as employment, income, residence, property ownership, rent, household expenses, and other banking and financial resources, assist applicants to obtain additional information and resolve discrepancies, and answer applicant questions regarding eligibility.

  • Review cases in the Colorado Benefits Management System (CBMS), Department of Labor and Employment, The Work Number and multiple interfacing local and federal interfaces. Research cases, as needed for all associated discrepancies.

  • Determine initial and on-going eligibility for public assistance programs in accordance with federal and state laws, county rules and regulations, and approves and issues benefits.

  • Review all necessary documents, systems, case comments, and case history to determine validity of discrepancy.

  • Record client information, enter and update information into complex state and county computer systems, and respond to inquiries about client records for administrative state hearings, federal reviews, fraud investigations, and federal and state program management and evaluation.

  • Completes and mail communication to Client, Content Management and Accounts Receivable.

  • Ensure benefit calculations made by the state computer system are accurate in order to reduce/eliminate errors.  Impact of financial errors is significant due to state and federal sanctions.

  • Report daily work progress to Supervisor.

  • Explain rights and responsibilities to clients and provide referrals to non-profit agencies and other service providers to facilitate a comprehensive solution to the client's issues.

  • Monitor changes in client's status, contact clients to verify changes, and make appropriate adjustments to eligibility and support payments.

  • Monitor changes in the Colorado Benefits Management System (CBMS) and adjust work processes to ensure accurate provision of benefits.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience determining eligibility for a variety of public assistance programs.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

  • Licensure: None
